Why bi-weekly service is a bad idea.

Customer sent a pic that their pool is looking “soupy”. They are on bi-weekly service and their pool was last cleaned a week and a half ago (next service is early next week).

When it’s 100 degrees out in Texas summers, your chemicals will never hold for two weeks. Evaporation, people swimming, and environmental factors will kill your chemistry in two weeks.

We rarely offer bi-weekly service because I personally feel that weekly chemical balancing service is better. You get a tech’s eyes on your equipment and pool once a week, chemicals stay balanced 100% of the time, and it’s the same cost as bi-weekly full service.

🧽 Why we clean your filter every 3 months (not 4-6)

We get asked this a lot: "Does it really matter if I wait an extra month or two?"

Here in Central Texas, yes — more than most places. Our pumps run 12 hours a day in summer and 8 in winter, which is a brutal schedule compared to milder climates. That heavy runtime, plus our heat and hard water, means equipment here wears out faster than the national "averages" you'll find online. Real-world numbers from what we actually see in the field:

What a dirty filter does to your equipment:

When your filter clogs, your pump has to work harder to push water through it — for all those extra runtime hours. Add a few months of that strain on top of an already demanding schedule, and it adds up fast:

🔧 Pump: In this area, we typically see pumps last 5-7 years — well short of the 8-12 years you'll read about in general guides. That's a direct result of our runtime and climate. A pump constantly fighting a clogged filter on top of that schedule wears its seals and bearings even faster, pushing it toward the low end. A typical replacement runs around $3,000 installed.

🔥 Heater: A dirty filter restricts water flow to the heater, which is one of the most common reasons heaters short-cycle, fail to fire, or overheat. That's extra strain your heater doesn't need on top of Texas summers. A brand-name natural gas heater (like a MasterTemp 400) runs around $6,200 installed as a straight swap-out — more if a gas line or plumbing needs to be run.

🧺 The filter itself: We typically see cartridges hold up well for about 18 months to 2 years before the bands start breaking — sooner if they're run dirty for stretches instead of cleaned on schedule. Regular 3-month cleanings help you get the full life out of the cartridge instead of losing it early.

The bottom line: a 3-month cleaning costs you almost nothing. Skipping it puts thousands of dollars of equipment on a shorter clock — especially with the kind of runtime hours our pools put in.

🛑 THE TRUTH ABOUT THE VIRAL "SIMPLE SCOOP" POOL TREND 🛑

We’ve seen the Facebook ads taking over your feed. You know the ones: "Just throw in one simple scoop a week and your pool magically stays crystal clear and perfectly balanced forever!"

As pool pros, we wish it was that easy. But before you buy that expensive bucket of "magic powder," here is what those viral ads aren't telling you in the fine print:
❌ It is NOT a sanitizer. Simple Scoop does not contain chlorine. If you stop adding chlorine or running your salt system, invisible bacteria and viruses are still throwing a party in your water.
❌ It does NOT balance your water. Read their website carefully—Step 1 is still manually balancing your pH, Alkalinity, and Calcium. The scoop cannot fix crashing pH or stabilization issues.
❌ The hidden danger of Copper. This product relies heavily on copper to fight algae. Copper doesn't evaporate. Every week you dump a scoop in, that metal builds up. Eventually, it leads to green hair, ruined swimsuits, and permanent black or turquoise stains on your liner or plaster.
❌ You are paying a massive markup. Strip away the clever marketing, and it’s just an overpriced blend of non-chlorine shock, copper algaecide, and clarifier.

The Bottom Line:There is no "magic pill" for pool chemistry. Clear water does not always equal safe, balanced water.Save your money, protect your equipment from stain damage, and let the pros handle the actual science.

POOL OWNERS — BE HONEST

When was the last time your filter was professionally cleaned?

A — Within 3 months
B — 3–6 months
C — I can’t remember
D — What filter?

If it looks like this, I bet the answer is C or D!

Your filter is the heart of your pool system — and most pool owners don't think about it until something goes wrong.

A dirty or clogged filter doesn't just mean cloudy water. It means your pump is working twice as hard to push water through restricted flow — shortening its lifespan significantly. It means your chemicals aren't circulating properly — so even if your chemical levels look right, the water isn't actually being sanitized evenly. And it means debris and organics are sitting in your system longer — which is basically an open invitation for algae.

We see this constantly: a pool that's been treated correctly on paper but looks off. Nine times out of ten — it's the filter.

Cartridge filters should be cleaned every 3 months minimum. DE filters need to be broken down and recharged regularly. Sand filters need to be backwashed weekly or bi-weekly and sand replaced every 3-4 years.

How often do you clean out your skimmer basket? If it looks like this, the answer is not often enough. A clogged skimmer restricts water flow, which stresses your pump and filter and shortens their lifespan. We check and clear ours every visit. I was servicing a pool today and the neighbor asked me to come over and give him a quote for weekly service. I won’t name the builder, but these were his readings. He is still in his builder’s 90 day “startup” period where the builder provides weekly service. These aren’t the worst readings I’ve seen, but my guess is that the builder uses 3 chemicals: tabs, liquid chlorine, and muriatic acid.

Here’s my take:
Chlorine - fine
CYA - fine, but could be a little higher in summer
PH- very low end, any lower and it starts causing skin and eye irritation, corrodes metal parts in the equipment, and destroys free chlorine quickly.
Alkalinity - very low, causes rapid swings in pH and damages pool equipment
Phosphates - high, coupled with highly acidic water, will destroy chlorine and invite algae growth in this heat
Calcium - low, will actually try to pull calcium from the new plaster and create etching.

Additionally: the builder installed the filter backwards with the drain plug 3” from the foundation of the house, making it harder to clean the filter. They also installed the filter band clamp on the side facing the house. Result: when the filter gets cleaned, they will have to step over all the plumbing to loosen the band clamp and all the water from the filter drain plug will shoot out right into the foundation and make a mess.

I see this stuff everyday and just want pool owners to be informed.

If your pool has been getting rained on every day this week — it's not as okay as it looks. 🌧️

We've had two solid weeks of daily rain here in the area and it's not letting up. Here's what that's actually doing to your pool and why it matters heading into the weekend:

💧 Your sanitizer is being diluted. Every inch of rain that falls into your pool is untreated water. It drags your chlorine levels down and creates an opening for algae and bacteria to grow — even when the water still looks perfectly clear.

🍃 Your pH is dropping. Rainwater is naturally acidic. Repeated daily storms are pulling your pool's pH in the wrong direction, making your chlorine less effective and your water harder on equipment and surfaces.

⚖️ Your alkalinity is getting knocked around. Alkalinity is what keeps your pH stable. When rain beats it up repeatedly, pH starts swinging — and a pool with unstable pH is almost impossible to keep balanced without constant adjustments.

🌿 Your baskets are filling up fast. Leaves, pollen, dirt, and runoff pile into your skimmer and pump baskets during heavy rain. Clogged baskets strain your pump and restrict water flow — and a strained pump wears out way ahead of schedule.

🟢 Algae is watching and waiting. Low chlorine, unstable pH, and organic debris in the water is exactly the combination algae needs to take hold. We've seen pools go from crystal clear to visibly green in under 72 hours after a stretch of rain like this.

Your pool pump is out there working hard every single day. The least it asks for is a clean path to do its job. 🙏

Two of the most common — and most preventable — equipment problems we see:

𝟭. Clogged skimmer and pump baskets.
This one seems obvious but gets ignored constantly. When baskets are full of leaves and debris, your pump has to work harder to pull water through. Over time, that strain adds up. Motors wear out faster, impellers clog, and you end up with a repair bill that a 5-minute basket cleaning would have prevented. Check your baskets weekly. Seriously.

𝟮. Filter cleaning every 3-4 months.
Whether you have a cartridge filter or a DE filter, it needs to be cleaned on a regular schedule — not just when your flow looks low, and not just once a season. A dirty filter makes your pump work against resistance it was never designed to handle. We recommend every 3 to 4 months as a baseline, and more often if you've had a green pool event, a big storm, or heavy use.

Your pump and filter are the heart of your pool. Neglecting them doesn't just affect water quality — it affects how long that equipment lasts and what it costs you to replace it.
