So we started with a 9ft by 12ft deck, the framing had to have some repairs also new flooring.
Then we added a new lower deck with a much nicer set of
stairs and new hand rail all the way around!
And when the new back door arrives we will be replacing it as well.

So here's how to build a strong set of steps.
1) measure down from the highest point of the surface you wish your steps to come to. The top steps in the photos from top deck to the bottom is 19 and 1/2 in divide that by the height of the steps you are comfortable with they should not exceed 7 3/4 inchs tall and no more than 3/8 difference from your first step to your last.
(It turns out it's a human thing more than a 3/8 difference and people stumble and fall who knew) I made the top steps six and a half inches that allowed three perfect steps.

To get you leth take the number of steps in this case three times 11 this will give you the board length you need for your 2 by 12 stringer.
2) pick out a good 2 by 12 however long you may need.
As few knots as possible and no cracks no opposing knots or not so go all the way through this board will be structurally weak for this purpose.
3) take your framing square and Fringe square clamps place clamp "A" the desired height in my case six and a half inches please clamp "B" at 10 in this will allow a 1-in overhang giving you 11 in when finished.
4) take your circular saw and cut to your marks and not passed cutting past will weaken the physical structure of the step stringer after you've cut all of them go back with a jigsaw finish the cuts and you'll have your stair stringer.
5) cut an inch and a half off the back face and the bottom face of your step stringer then attach a piece of 2x12 mark for your screws and then screw through it into your stringers this will prevent them from breaking easily and now they are held in a piece that you can easily put into place by putting screws through the 2 by 12 back plate into the framing of your deck with structural screws or lag bolts and easy strong connection then install your stare shreds in this case I used 2x6 x48 in two pieces which gives you 11 inches.
