With the onset of fall comes the opportunity to create a new garden or refresh and update an established one, and autumn plant sales can help us to do just that!😃

If you've been thinking about adding more native plants to your outdoor spaces, it really helps to be prepared. Take for example the beautiful blooming buckwheat in the photo, Eriogonum fasciculatum. Native plants bring a different look and feel to your yard, and it can be tricky navigating the change. That wonderful fall planting window is now just about upon us. Before we get caught up in the doing though, let's take some time to think, to dream, and to plan!

Native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, edible gardens, even container gardens--it's fun to think about what we'd like to see in our outdoor spaces. Now more than ever people tell me more color, more life, and less water, less fuss. The fact is there's no better time to make those changes than right now.

This is a photo of a Texas olive tree in bloom, a favorite tree of mine and a smaller tree that fits many garden spaces without becoming a future maintenance headache. As much as I love the white, crepe-y flowers, I wouldn't site it near paved areas because of the fruit. A lot of thoughtful garden design involves not just the dream but knowing what plants do and planning accordingly to make those garden dreams come true!🙂

Ready for your garden to bounce back?

Even though it's still sweltering, I'm hoping and telling myself that we're looking at weeks now--not months--for temperatures to start to subside!🥵😊

In September and October watch your garden plants start to recover, rebound, and in many cases, rebloom!

Unless your plants are beyond bouncing back....☹️ I consulted with a client today who had some crispy ones in his yard. If that's the case, or you've been staring at bare ground in the yard all summer, now is definitely the time to get a plan in place. (I help people with that so please do reach out!)🌞

After a good desert rain, if your plants look like they've grown overnight it's because they have!

Rain gives our plants soft, natural water along with nutrients, plus it washes off the dust. It's also one of those things that's outside of our control, while garden planning is not--and I would argue just as essential as the desert rain.😊

When it gets this hot sometimes the nearest we get to our yards is through a window, looking outside while staying comfortable in the A/C! Which got me to thinking about how important our views are, and how they are often "overlooked".

I recently met with homeowners concerned that their landscape just did not look right. They couldn't quite put their finger on what. Could I help?

Of course! I pointed out a number of things that can be changed, and how to mitigate other things that could not be changed, or would be too cost prohibitive to alter.

Not every situation is as straightforward as this photo (btw, don't do this). 😊

Why does a yard lack flow and cohesiveness? Reasons vary, but in my experience the answer can usually be traced back to lack of good design. Sometimes all we need are a few good tweaks to make a garden better.

In the yard pictured, a redesign expanded the planting area to include the agave. It is now set apart no more.😄

Quick question: are rocks the focus of your yard or are plants?

Out in the desert where water available to plants is scarce, they spread out to reduce competition for resources (like the brittlebush in the photo).

At home, however, we have irrigation available for our garden plants--natural rainfall in the Las Vegas Valley is simply not enough for most of our plants to look their best. So why are rocks the main attraction in so many landscaped Vegas Valley yards? 🤷‍♀️

Then, when combined with concrete block walls and paved areas, we end up with not just a stark landscape but an inferno with tons of reflected heat (and then we add black pots!).😄🥵

The right quantity of plants, the right types of plants (including groundcover), rock size and boulder placement all play a part in whether we get to see a gorgeous garden or just a sea of rocks.

July is such a great month to revisit our outdoor spaces and an opportunity to get ready for fall planting season. Sometimes a pair of fresh eyes and some fresh ideas is all it takes to makes a big difference. Don't let rocks stand between you and a garden to love!
