Tall Ironweed (Vernonia gigantea) blooms from mid-summer to early fall in woodland edges, pastures, and roadsides. It’s native to the eastern US and a wide range variety of butterflies and bees pollinate its flowers. The name Ironweed comes from the toughness of its stem and how challenging it is to uproot this native plant.

Goldenrod: so much wildlife value!

As summer fades into fall, goldenrod bursts into bloom and becomes a busy gathering place for bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and wasps. 🐝 Its seeds provide food for birds, while the plant also supports a surprising number of insects throughout its stems and foliage.

And if you’ve always associated goldenrod with fall allergies, here’s a little garden myth to put to rest: goldenrod is insect-pollinated, while ragweed is a much more common source of airborne fall pollen.
