Incredible surviving medieval ridge and furrow – the unmistakable remains of England’s ancient open-field farming system.

For centuries, much of rural England was organised into huge communal fields controlled through the manor. Rather than individual farmers owning neat, enclosed fields, arable land was divided into numerous long strips cultivated by different families. Alongside these were common pastures for grazing livestock, meadows, woodland and land reserved for the lord of the manor.

Generations of ploughing gradually created the distinctive ridge-and-furrow pattern still visible across parts of the countryside today. Each raised ridge was separated by a shallow furrow that helped with drainage.

Then came enclosure.

Between the medieval period and the 19th century, increasingly large areas of common and open-field land were consolidated into individual farms and enclosed with hedges, walls and fences. Parliamentary enclosure alone affected around 6.8 million acres – roughly one-fifth of England.

The consequences were enormous. Ancient communal farming practices disappeared, field boundaries were transformed and the familiar patchwork landscape of hedgerows and enclosed fields became increasingly dominant.

Yet in places where the old fields escaped later ploughing, their medieval ridges remain clearly visible.

They are effectively the fossilised footprints of a farming system that shaped rural England for centuries.
