🐿️ Swamp Sweepers Animal of the Day: White Squirrel
White squirrels are a rare color variation of the eastern gray squirrel. Their unique appearance is caused by a genetic condition called leucism, which reduces pigmentation in their fur. Despite their striking white coats, they behave just like other squirrels—gathering nuts, building nests, and helping forests grow by spreading seeds.
Spotting a white squirrel is a special treat and a reminder that nature is full of surprises! 🌳🤍

🐟 Swamp Sweepers Animal of the Day: Madtom Catfish

Small fish. Big attitude.
The madtom catfish is one of those species most people never notice on the job—but it’s everywhere in the right habitat.
You’ll usually find them tucked under rocks in clean rivers, creek mouths, and hard-bottom lake areas. They’re only a few inches long, but they’re built for survival in moving water.
⚠️ Quick field note:
Some madtom species have sharp fin spines with a mild sting. Nothing serious, but you’ll feel it if you grab one wrong.
🌊 Why it matters for shoreline work:
They’re a good sign of clean, oxygen-rich water
Show up in rocky / hard bottom zones
Easy to miss, but part of a healthy ecosystem most people don’t realize is there
Another reminder that even the smallest species tell you a lot about what’s going on under the surface.

🪶 Swamp Sweepers Animal of the Day: Great Blue Heron
The great blue heron is the largest heron in North America and a familiar sight along lakes, rivers, wetlands, and shorelines. Standing over 4 feet tall with a wingspan that can exceed 6 feet, these patient hunters are experts at catching fish, frogs, and other aquatic prey. Great blue herons play an important role in maintaining balanced freshwater ecosystems.
Watching one slowly stalk through shallow water before striking with lightning-fast precision is one of nature’s most impressive sights. 🌊🐟

🦫 Swamp Sweepers Animal of the Day: Muskrat
Muskrats are semi-aquatic mammals commonly found in marshes, ponds, lakes, and wetlands throughout North America. Excellent swimmers, they use their long tails and partially webbed feet to move through the water while feeding on cattails, reeds, and other aquatic plants. Their lodges and burrows create habitat for other wildlife and help shape wetland ecosystems.
If you spot a small brown animal cruising across the water with a thin tail trailing behind, there’s a good chance you’ve found a muskrat! 🌿🌊
