The Florida Department of Health in Polk County has confirmed a human case of locally acquired dengue and issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory. Polk County health officials and Mosquito Control are coordinating surveillance, treatment, inspections, and prevention efforts.

This comes as neighboring Hillsborough County has experienced a major dengue outbreak, with more than 130 cases reported and a dengue-related death confirmed.

This is no longer something happening far away — dengue is affecting our region.
