How AC Units Work:
Most standard air conditioners can only cool a home about 20 degrees below the outside temperature. If it is 85°F or hotter outside, your AC cannot physically reach 65°F.Lowering the number does not make the air blow colder; it just makes the unit run longer.
Risks of Setting it to 65°F
High energy bills: Your system will run non-stop trying to reach an impossible goal.
Frozen coils: Continuous running in hot weather can freeze the indoor evaporator coils and break the system.
Mechanical strain:
The compressor works too hard and can suffer permanent damage.
These are just some risks when you try to turn the AC down that low.
Side note: if your system is not cooling the house and it’s getting hotter, turning the thermostat down even lower will not solve the problem.
