Sometimes during an inspection, you don’t just find evidence of bats…

You find the bats staring right back at you.

These guys were tucked behind the gable vent watching me while I inspected the home. Underneath them, you can see the bat guano accumulating below their roosting area.

Unfortunately for them, I had some bad news:

“We’re getting you out of here today.” 😂🦇

This home is getting a complete bat exclusion, using one-way doors that allow the bats to safely leave the structure while preventing them from getting back inside.

We love bats — just not when they’re living in your attic.

🦇 THIS IS BASICALLY A HIGHWAY STRAIGHT INTO THE ATTIC.

Look at where this siding corner meets the shingles.

That pile sitting on the roof? Bat guano. And it’s coming directly out of the opening. 😳

Now watch when I put my hand underneath the siding corner — the opening leads directly into the attic.

This is exactly how bats take advantage of construction transitions on a home. Where siding meets roofing, brick, soffits, or other materials, even a small unfinished gap can create an entry point.

To us, it looks like a tiny construction flaw.

To a bat, it’s a front door. 🦇🏠

The siding was installed in a way that left an opening bats were able to take advantage of — and now they’re living behind it.

At these intersecting ridge lines, the roofer needed to make the ridge vent fit.

Their solution? Cut the ridge vent product.

The problem is, the manufacturer does not recommend cutting the product this way — and those modifications can create vulnerable openings in the roofing system.

I put my hand flat on the roof and slide it directly underneath the flashing of this roof vent.

That small opening is all a bat needs. Once they get underneath the flashing, they can drop directly into the attic.

At first glance, this probably doesn’t look like much.

But watch closely as I move the camera down. You can see bat guano inside the crack — and then you can barely make out the tiny opening the bats are using.

That’s the part most homeowners don’t realize: bats do NOT need a big hole to get into an attic.

An opening can look insignificant from the ground and still provide enough room for bats to squeeze into the structure.
