The July garden in Southwest Louisiana is always full of pollinators! I grow passion vine specifically for the Gulf Frittilary butterflies - it’s their host plant! I can enjoy the fruit all summer and watch the butterflies begin to arrive in droves in August - then it’s their turn to lay their eggs and let their larvae decimate the vine like nature intended! In September, there are HUNDREDS of their babies in my garden. Hundreds. And each year, the vine returns more beautiful than the year before! 🦋

This pretty lady is feeding on a Tithonia flower (Mexican Sunflower) which I also grow from seed every year - one of the best plants in the garden!

Registration is NOW OPEN for 2026 Fall Seed Starting in August! No experience necessary!

This will be an informal "open house" type setting in the Sprout Savvy classroom where each gardener interested in starting their own fall crop seeds can choose one of three dates, August 13, 14 or 15, and arrive anytime between 9am and 4pm, to sow seed varieties of their choice. When you register, the system will show 9am, but again, you may come anytime between 9am and 4pm on any of the three dates, whenever suits your schedule then. All seeds and supplies included!

Each participant will sow fall seeds in the starter tray and will also be provided with all other fall seeds that should be directly sown into the garden throughout the fall months. Participants will also receive two fall Bella Rosa determinate tomato plants (grown by me!) that will be ready to transplant.

On your chosen date, you can plant varieties of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, celery and Swiss chard.

You may also choose from the following seeds to take with you for planting during fall months: sugar snap peas, carrots, beets, collard, mustard and turnip greens, lettuce, spinach, radishes, turnips.

In Southwest Louisiana, I’m enjoying NOT gardening in hot July and just appreciating what the summer garden has to bring without me doing a darn thing. I prepare for it long before it arrives.

Summers in my yard are for the insects, the birds, the wildlife. All of them. No spraying anything. It’s for them, not for me. They are the reason my plants always thrive. Work with nature, not against it. I won’t fight battles I cannot win! Somehow we all get exactly what we need every single time. ❤️
