Manglier (Groundsel bush, Baccharis halimifolia) is a Louisiana medicinal plant traditionally used in teas to treat cold, flu, fever, and respiratory congestion due to its strong antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies suggest it may help manage metabolic conditions like obesity and Type 2 diabetes
Key Health Benefits and Uses:
• Respiratory & Immune Health: Historically, Native American and Creole communities used manglier to combat colds, pneumonia, and mucus congestion. It is considered an immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral agent.
• Metabolic Support: Research indicates that extracts from the stem and leaves show potential to combat inflammation in fat cells, improve insulin sensitivity, and assist with weight management.
• Anti-Inflammatory: Studies have shown it contains compounds that reduce chronic inflammation.
• Traditional Remedy: Known as a “cure-all” in folk medicine, it was historically used for digestive issues and as a general tonic.
Preparation and Precautions:
• Usage: Manglier is typically brewed as a strong, bitter tea from its leaves and stems. It is often sweetened with honey or lemon to offset the bitterness.
• Safety: While traditionally used for generations, it is considered a potent medicinal herb. Consult a healthcare provider before using it, especially for chronic conditions.
