Fall storms in Northwest Georgia don't usually break things outright. For Rock Spring homeowners, they find what was already weak.

On the electrical side, the main event is the surge. A nearby strike or a utility fluctuation sends voltage where it doesn't belong, and the damage often shows up days later, an appliance that acts strange, a system that won't hold a setting. Whole-home surge protection at the panel handles what plug-in strips can't.

Pay attention to breakers, too. A breaker that trips once during a storm did its job. A breaker that keeps tripping afterward is telling you about a fault, and repeatedly resetting it is the wrong response.

On the plumbing side, heavy rain overwhelms drainage. Yard drains and gutters back up, water pushes toward the foundation, and if you've got a sump pump, this is the season it earns its keep, or fails quietly when nobody's watching.

Worth checking now: test the sump pump, clear the drains, and note anything electrical that's been behaving oddly since the last storm.

Your water heater is about to start working a lot harder.

Once the mornings turn cool, that tank goes from heating 70° groundwater to heating 50° groundwater. Same unit. Twice the workload. That's exactly why so many water heaters fail in October and November instead of in July.

Here's what to watch for before the cold hits:

🔸 Popping or rumbling sounds — sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank
🔸 Water that runs lukewarm, then cold, faster than it used to
🔸 Rusty or cloudy hot water
🔸 Moisture, rust, or pooling around the base
🔸 A unit that's 10+ years old with no service history

A fall flush and inspection takes under an hour. Replacing a tank that ruptured on the coldest night of the year takes a lot more than that, and costs a lot more too.

We service and install water heaters throughout LaFayette and all of Northwest Georgia. Book now while the schedule is open.

LaFayette homeowners deserve a straight answer before the work starts, not a surprise on the invoice.

Upfront pricing means the number you approve is the number you pay. Simple idea, but it changes the whole experience, especially on plumbing and electrical work where the scope isn't obvious from the surface. A slow drain can be a clog or a collapsed line. A tripping breaker can be a bad device or a wiring problem inside the wall. Diagnosing first and quoting second keeps everyone honest.

Licensing matters for the same reason. Licensed plumbers and electricians work to code, pull permits where required, and leave you with work that passes inspection and holds up when you sell.

Woods Plumbing & Electric serves LaFayette and communities throughout Northwest Georgia, handling repairs, replacements, and installations for both trades under one roof.

If the lights in your Chickamauga home dim when the AC kicks on, your panel is telling you something.

An electrical panel is sized for the load it was built to carry. Homes wired in the sixties and seventies were designed for a fraction of what we plug in today, before central air, EV chargers, tankless water heaters, hot tubs, and a shop full of tools.

Warning signs worth taking seriously: breakers that trip repeatedly on the same circuit, flickering or dimming lights, a panel that feels warm to the touch, buzzing, scorch marks, rust, or any burning smell. Rust and corrosion in particular mean moisture has reached somewhere it shouldn't.

A panel upgrade isn't only about capacity. Modern panels bring proper labeling, correctly sized breakers, and current code compliance, which matters for your insurance and shows up in a home inspection when you sell.

This is licensed, permitted work. It isn't a weekend project, and it isn't worth the risk.

When your water heater goes out, speed matters more than almost anything else, and Rex's experience is a good picture of what fast should look like in LaFayette.

He called around 10 a.m. Our team arrived ahead of the scheduled window and finished the replacement in under 90 minutes.

Water heaters usually warn you before they quit. Most tanks last somewhere in the eight-to-twelve-year range, and the signs build gradually: hot water running rusty or smelling metallic, a rumbling or popping sound as sediment hardens on the tank floor, water that doesn't stay hot as long as it used to, or dampness collecting around the base.

That last one is the urgent one. Moisture at the bottom of the tank usually means the tank itself is compromised, and a slow seep tends to become a full failure without much warning.

If your unit is past the decade mark, it's worth knowing its age and condition now rather than during a cold shower.

Thank you, Rex, we appreciate you taking the time.
