Garden with Fekisha Hi, I’m Fekisha, a gardener in Louisiana Zone 9a who loves growing food, flowers, and joy right in my backyard.

What started as a simple garden has become a place of peace, learning, and plenty of homegrown harvests.

🌱💚 Okra Day 16!

Look at these little babies coming along! 🌱 I’ve got three different varieties growing in this patch:

🌱 Crimson Spineless
🌱 Cowhorn
🌱 Emerald

Some are bigger than others, but that’s gardening! They don’t all grow at the same pace. I’m just happy to see them coming through and this little okra patch starting to take shape. 💚🌱

And the main thing is for me to show you that you can grow okra without any special equipment! 🌱💚 You don’t have to have a fancy setup to get out there, plant some seeds, and grow your own food.

Now grow, babies, GROW! 😂 I’m already looking forward to seeing how these three varieties compare as they mature!

🌱🫘 Still harvesting after all this time! I’m feeling so blessed that I’m still getting production from the cowpeas I sowed on April 20th! In this video, I’m also showing two other areas of Purple Hull peas that are coming up. It’s been a tough year for gardeners and farmers. Between the weather, pests, and wildlife helping themselves, it’s been a challenge, but that’s gardening. We celebrate the wins, learn from the setbacks, and keep growing.

🌺 Don’t throw away those hard okra pods! 🎨🌱

Once okra gets too hard to eat, that doesn’t mean it has to go to waste! Cut across the pod and you’ll find the cutest little flower shape hiding inside. 🌺 Add a little paint, press it onto paper, and you’ve got your own garden-made stamp!

And you don’t have to stop with the flower. 🎨💛 Use the rest of the pod, move it through the paint, make different patterns, and just let your imagination take over. There’s no right or wrong way to create!

Who knew an old hard okra pod could turn into a paintbrush AND a stamp? 😂🌱🎨 Just another way to have a little fun with what comes out of the garden!

😂🌽 Remember when I was crying on the ground over that corn crop that just DID NOT work out?! 😭🤣

Well, the best way to get over a failed crop is to PLANT ANOTHER ONE! 🌱💚

🌱 7/24/26 — I sowed these purple hull pea seeds, and look at them now! Baby, these purple hulls understood the assignment! 🙌 😂💚

One crop might humble you, but the next one will have you feeling like a farmer again. 😂🌱 Keep planting!

🌱 Late evening yardlong bean picking! 🌅💛

One thing I love about yardlong beans is how FAST they grow! I like to pick mine while they’re still green, flexible, and tender. If you leave them on the vine too long, the pods can get thicker and tougher as the seeds inside mature.

But don’t throw those bigger, tougher ones away or toss them in the compost! 🌱💛 I still use those in soups and stews where they can cook longer. Just because they got a little too big for the way you normally like to eat them doesn’t mean they have to go to waste! 🍲🫘

And don’t forget to look UP! 😂 Yardlong beans are climbers, and some of the best ones will be hiding way at the top of the trellis. Picking regularly also keeps you checking the vines for beans that seem to go from tiny to LONG overnight! 🌱😂

If I’m saving seeds, that’s a different story—I leave those pods on the vine until they mature and begin drying instead of picking them young for eating. 🌱🫘

Nothing like getting that last little harvest in before the sun goes down. 🌅💛

Happy Sunday, y’all! ☀️🌿💛

Just me enjoying a beautiful day in the garden under my yardlong bean arch, with a fresh zinnia from the garden tucked in my hair. 🌸😊 There’s something about sunshine, fresh air, and watching everything grow that makes a Sunday feel even better.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and beautiful Sunday! 💛🌿

Garden update! 🌿❤️ Today’s garden work was a little more special than usual.

After soaking my Red Burgundy okra seeds overnight, I headed outside to get them sown. 🌱 But today is also my daddy’s heavenly birthday. 🕊️❤️ He passed away in 2010, and I decided to wear one of his old plaid shirts while I worked. Just a simple way to keep a little piece of him close today.

Of course, knowing my daddy, he probably wouldn’t want me out here working this hard. 😂 And Mama made sure to agree with that part—“That’s right!” 😂❤️

Today I planted more than okra seeds. I planted them while carrying memories of Daddy right along with me. 🌱❤️ Happy heavenly birthday, Daddy. 🕊️

😂🥾 Women with men who work outside know EXACTLY what I’m talking about!

They come through that door after working outside… STOMP STOMP STOMP 🥾😂 Dirt, grass, mud and whatever else they picked up along the way!

Then it’s me with the broom like… DON’T COME UP IN HERE LIKE THAT! 🧹😂😂

You gotta love them tho😂😂😂

Garden update! 🌿 Getting my Red Burgundy okra seeds tucked in for an overnight soak, giving them a good head start before planting. 🌱

While they soak, I’m still out here on yard duty, working on the row where they’ll be planted. There’s always something to do in the garden! 😂

One step at a time! I’m getting these seeds ready while getting their new garden space ready too. ❤️🌿
