Butler Farm and Gardens

Butler Farm and Gardens Hi everyone and welcome to our page! We are a suburban “mini” farm in extraterritorial Kyle, TX. These are our stories…

We grow our own fruit and produce, raise chickens, a pig, a goat and several other critters.

Alrighty, here we go on day 4! The fourth raised bed has been taken apart and put back together correctly. The screws were already starting to rust so that was fun…

Today’s tasks are:

1. Refill the big planter
2. Secure the longest hose in the whole world to the raised beds and drill drip holes. The lady that gave me her old cookbooks a few years ago, gave me her old hose that was kinking so I could make this. I would have been grateful to have a 50’ one, so this turned out extra amazing! Now I can water the whole garden area by simply turning on the faucet.
3. Arrange the w**e barrels in a row and clean off the patio so I can assess how much sand I need to level it out again. I’m going to put the hammock and lounge chairs on it for seating. The w**e barrels will get potatoes and the round planter is getting carrots and radishes when the time comes (October). The short, long planter behind is getting the garlic (I will start rooting the cloves inside in the next couple of weeks).

I won this little seed starter at my garden club meeting just in time! I’m going to let the dirt soak up the lovely fish pond water first. Then I will start my broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprout seeds inside. They should be ready to go out in a month or so when the temperatures get a little lower (hopefully).

The first bed is done (for now, it still needs mulch but I do that after I plant real plants…)! It’s all watered in and the cat deterring florals have been positioned. This one will be getting the broccoli, brussels sprouts and bok choy for the winter. But, for now it just needs to not have cats 😹.

I’m trying the in ground jug method this time around. These kittens are mowing through the litter, so I have plenty of them. Yes I know, plastic in the garden is frowned upon, and YOU certainly do not have to do it… but anyway, I have my layer of decomposing logs on the bottom. I filled it halfway with soil. It’s already pretty lively because it was in the planter before, but I added a small layer of Emmy’s rabbit poo compost. The jugs have a hole or two on each side and the bottom. This should solve the deep watering issue I was having (plus I will be able to tell how much water I am putting into this more easily). Now I just keep adding soil, and do it all again 3 more times 😩🥵.
