Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
My name is Seth Hughes, owner and operator of HughBuilt Land Management.
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, my family, and the reason I started this business for anyone who is new here.
My love for excavation started long before I ever sat in a real machine. As a kid, I spent my time digging in the sandbox, building little roads with toy trucks, and damming up creeks just to see how water moved. As I got older, that interest turned into grading driveways with the tractor on our family farm, landscaping, renting equipment for projects for friends and family, and watching hours of videos of guys doing the work I dreamed of doing myself. Eventually it clicked that this wasn’t just a hobby. It was what I was meant to do.
Before excavation became my full-time career, I earned a degree in Graphic Design and Marketing from Carson Newman University. Most people wouldn’t connect those fields to dirt work, but they overlap more than you’d think. Graphic design taught me precision and structure. Marketing taught me communication and how to guide people through decisions.
After a tough layoff in the graphic-design world, I had the chance to work for Southern Site Contractors, a large civil excavation company. That job showed me what real heavy-duty dirt work looked like. I learned how to move earth efficiently, how to build pads and drainage systems correctly, and what separates a job that lasts a few months from a job that lasts a lifetime. Those lessons stuck with me, and today I bring that same level of care and precision to every project through HughBuilt Land Management.
I eventually stepped away from excavation for a couple of years and worked with the Knoxville Utilities Board. That experience gave me hands-on exposure to fiber, waterlines, gas lines, stormwater systems, and sewage mitigation. Understanding how these systems work above and below ground is a major advantage in this field. It teaches you how to plan around critical infrastructure, how to dig safely, and how to handle excavation work without creating bigger problems. That utility experience completely changed the way I approach every project.
Those skills blend with my design background more than most people realize. Laying out a job is a lot like laying out a design file. Every move matters. Every detail has a purpose. Clear communication with customers is just as important as a clean final grade. That combination of technical understanding and creative planning is a big part of what sets my approach apart. I am not just running a machine. I am focused on giving people a clear, professional, dependable experience from start to finish.
Even though I am hands-on with every job from quoting to digging to cleanup, I’m not working alone. Over the years I’ve built a strong network of friends, subcontractors, tradesmen, and operators that I can rely on whenever a project calls for extra help. No matter the scenario, there is someone I can call who knows their craft and shows up ready to work.
This business is my full-time focus, outside of helping my wife take care of our three-month-old daughter. Everything I do, from the early mornings to the late nights, is for them. I strive to demonstrate that same level of commitment and responsibility into every customer’s project.
Owning and operating my own equipment has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I wanted the ability to control a job from the first scoop to the final pass and make sure every detail is done the right way. There are too many people out there doing quick fixes, cutting corners, and leaving homeowners with recurring problems. That is not what I’m about. I believe in long-lasting solutions. If I’m going to put my name on something, it needs to be built the right way. Hugh-Built.
If you ever need grading, drainage, driveway installs, shed pads, land clearing, or any type of dirt work, I would appreciate the chance to earn your business!
Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey so far. It means a lot to me and my family.
