I used to think flower cuttings were harder than this, but some of them really do root beautifully in just water 🌸 A few little things that help:
🌿 Use a clean jar so the stem doesn’t rot
✂️ Cut just below a leaf node, that’s where roots usually form best
💧 Change the water every few days so it stays fresh
☀️ Keep the jar in bright light, but not harsh direct sun
🌱 Wait until the roots are a few inches long before moving them into soil
My favorite part is being able to watch the roots grow. It makes propagation feel a lot less intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out.

Build a Butterfly & Pollinator Garden 🦋

A healthy pollinator garden supports more than just butterflies. It provides food, shelter, and breeding space for many beneficial insects throughout the season.

To create a balanced habitat, include:

1️⃣ Host plants for caterpillars
2️⃣ Nectar flowers for adult butterflies and pollinators

Here are some reliable butterfly-friendly plant pairings:

- Monarchs — Milkweed for caterpillars and Joe Pye W**d for nectar
- Zebra Swallowtails — Pawpaw trees paired with nectar-rich Lantana
- Gulf Fritillaries — Passion Vine for larvae and Coneflowers for adults
- Spicebush Swallowtails — Spicebush or Sassafras with Cardinal Flower nearby
- Painted Ladies — Thistles as host plants and Asters for nectar
- Tiger Swallowtails — Ash, Wild Cherry, or Tulip Tree with Gaillardia blooms
- Red Admirals — Nettles for caterpillars and flowering herbs for nectar
- Question Mark Butterflies — Hackberry or Elm trees supported by nearby flowering plants
- Sulphurs — Clover and legumes for larvae, with Garden Phlox for nectar
- Viceroys — Willow trees combined with diverse nectar flowers

🌿 Native plants are especially valuable because they naturally support local pollinators and require less maintenance over time.

A few thoughtful plant choices can turn any outdoor space into a vibrant refuge filled with butterflies, bees, and seasonal color.

Most lavender dies in American gardens because the gardener bought the wrong species for their zone — or the right zone but the wrong species for the kitchen.

Three types sit side by side at the garden center looking nearly identical. They're not.

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — the only one recommended for cooking. Low camphor, clean floral flavor. Hardy zones 5-9. Compact, short flower spikes. Varieties for cooking: Munstead, Hidcote, Royal Velvet, Folgate.

Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas) — the one with "rabbit ear" bracts on top of the flower head. Hardy zones 7-10 only. High camphor. Not for cooking. Thrives in heat where English struggles.

Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) — the big one. Two to three feet tall, long flower spikes, blooms later. Hardy zones 5-9. High camphor, medicinal flavor. Not for cooking. Produced commercially for oil.

The tag often just says "lavender." Read the botanical name.

One detail that saves more plants than anything else — lavender dies from wet soil in winter, not cold. Sharp drainage matters more than zone.
