⚡ The difference between “it works” and “it’s right.”

We were called out for an appliance that was repeatedly tripping its breaker. When we opened the connection, we found exposed conductors, questionable splices, improper grounding/bonding details, and an installation that simply wasn’t finished the way it should have been.

We corrected the connections, properly enclosed the splices, installed a cover designed for the appliance whip, secured the flexible conduit, and made sure the wiring was properly protected.

Electrical problems aren’t always obvious from the outside. A connection can work for years and still have issues that show up once modern protection is installed.

And remember: a breaker that keeps tripping isn’t necessarily a bad breaker. Sometimes it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Great review from helo... "Had a GFCI circuit go out and couldn't find where the tripped outlet was. Had a friend come by and we searched for an hour with negative results. Called Electric City and a Mr. Carry Jurek returned my call. After speaking with him about the issue he knew exactly where the tripped GFCI outlet was. He didn't even charge me for anything. I have their buisness card and use them for all of my electrical needs and this was one awesome example of why. Thank you Sir and Electric City."

Sometimes, a surge event will do this!

This customer was on vacation when a power surge hit the neighborhood (according to the neighbor). Soon after, all of their security cameras went offline. Since they were hundreds of miles away, they overnighted us a key so we could get inside and figure out what happened.

When we opened the electrical panel, we found every AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker had tripped.

At first glance, that might sound like a problem, but in reality, it’s exactly what these breakers are designed to do.

Modern AFCI breakers contain sensitive electronics that constantly monitor the electrical waveform. A significant surge or utility disturbance can create electrical “noise” or abnormal conditions that resemble an arc fault. Rather than taking a chance, the breakers trip to protect the home’s wiring and reduce the risk of an electrical fire.

In this case, the breakers did their job. After verifying there wasn’t any damage to the home’s electrical system, we safely reset the breakers and restored power to the affected circuits—including the customer’s cameras.

⚡ The takeaway: If you experience a major power surge and find multiple AFCI breakers tripped, don’t assume the breakers are defective. They’re often responding exactly as they were engineered to.

This is also a great reminder that whole-home surge protection is one of the best investments you can make. While no surge protector can stop every surge, it can dramatically reduce the amount of surge energy that reaches your home’s sensitive electronics and electrical devices.

We’re glad we could get everything back online before our customer returned home. Another reminder that electrical safety devices are there to protect your home!
