In 2015, the Sims family purchased the heritage Meier Olive Orchard. This historical orchard began in 1912 with Thomas Watkins planting the trees as a condition of inheriting the property. In 1950, the trees came under the care of Robert Meier, who began producing high-quality olive oil until his passing at the age of 92 in 2009.

Sims TLC at the Meier Olive Orchard carries on high-quality olive oil production, now featuring two types of Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Mission and Manzanilla. For more information or to purchase our Olive Oil, please visit our website:https://www.tlcolives.com/shop

Today is a special day! We are honored to be a chosen stop during the annual migration of Turkey Vultures, Cathartes aura. Around this time every year, we are delighted to look up into our row of Eucalyptus trees and see them filled with these magnificent birds. We never know when, or if, they decide to make us a stop on their route, so when they do, it sure is a treat!

Some fun facts about the Turkey Vulture:

They don't make nests! They lay their eggs directly on the ground. Eggs can be found in places such as caves, burrows, hollowed logs, or under fallen trees.

Vultures will stand with their wings spread open. This is called the "Horaltic Pose" and it is believed it acts as a method for drying the wings, warming the body, and baking off bacteria.

They can live up to 20 years in the wild!

Their diet consists mostly of carrion (dead and rotting flesh) and scavenge for their food. They are not known to kill small animals.

Speaking of diet, their digestive juices kill bacteria, which is why they don't get sick from eating rotten meat. It is even theorized that when they defecate on their feet and legs to keep cool, it also acts as an antiseptic!

It is best to enjoy the presence of these amazing creatures from afar; they use vomit as a self-defence mechanism and can spray their vomit up to 10 feet!

They're visits with us are always short but sweet. Just a quick over-night stop and they're back on the road....err sky... by dawn.

It's one of our favorite times of the year and something we always look forward to here at Sims TLC, though our chickens do not share in same our feelings of joy.

Coast Redwood

Standing tall and majestic, the Coast Redwood, also known as Sequoia sempervirens, commands attention as it reaches for the stars. These mystical giants have a towering presence of up to 400 feet high and 27 feet wide, making them the tallest trees in the world. Even more astonishing is that they can live for more than 2,000 years, firmly anchoring their roots in the earth of the ancient forests of California and Oregon. They are captivating to all who gaze upon them, leaving a sense of awe and wonder.

Did you know that California is home to a remarkable species of tree known as the California ash (Fraxinus dipetala)? California, or two-petal ash, is a species of ash in the Oleaceae (Olive) family native to northwestern Arizona, California, southern Nevada, and Utah to northern Baja California. In California, we find them in the Coast Ranges, Sierra foothills, and Peninsular Ranges at elevations of 300 to 4300 ft.

These magnificent trees are not only iconic symbols of California's natural beauty but also play a crucial role in the region's ecosystem and are a friend to pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds. This hardwood tree can reach a height of 23 feet tall, with sweetly fragranced flowers welcoming the spring.

Did you know?

As you walk through the sun-dappled forests of California, the towering sight and distinctive scent of the eucalyptus trees have long been an iconic symbol of the state's natural landscape. But did you know that these trees were actually introduced to California from Australia during the Gold Rush era as a potential source of timber and fuel?

However, their ecological impact has been met with mixed opinions and controversy. Love them or not, this species soon became one of California's most recognizable and beautiful features.
