Don’t tell Pete I shared this 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣 Poor guy is having a tough go of it with the amount of snow we currently have. Not to mention the hard layer of ice on top. But he didn’t see the little lip right there and oops…This is a serious lesson though. We do not go where my vehicle can’t access. If I’m not within a close enough range to comfortably carry an injured dog we skip your property for the day. This isn’t to be difficult. This is for the safety of the dogs. There are plenty of hazards in the winter. Hidden objects, ice, chemical ice melt and salt, freezing water and air temperatures. This time of year is hard on the dogs. But that’s why they have us handlers looking out for them. Hopefully winter doesn’t last much longer!!!! P.S Pete is fine but his ego is a little hurt….

What a dog. This is by far our largest flock in about a year. The properties that employ us we have been at for years. We mostly get resident geese testing on occasion to see if we still occupy the property. But with the bad weather the migratory flocks are moving around and this one just happened to land on the wrong property 😎 Good boy Pete 👍🏻

Follow up is key. Our first goal is always safety. We want the geese off of the grass which is where they make the most mess, is the clients main investment, and where they will encounter people. Canada geese are very stubborn, and also lazy. When in the water they feel safer and are less apt to move. When possible, I haze the geese from the immediate waterfront as well so they are gone for the majority of the day. Sometimes it isn’t safe for the dogs, kayak or RC boat to pursue them in the water. The laser light is an excellent tool, especially at a distance. However, it has the potential to be misused if not implemented properly by a wildlife professional. The laser will not work in full sun. It works best on overcast days and at night. The geese have unique vision based off of a horizontal angle, and an almost 360 view. Their specially adapted retinas absorb uv spectrum light best, and green and yellow are the brightest on their visual scale. They see the green light as another threat. It’s part of a greater group of tools used to get the job done correctly and safely.

Holy flock! Good boy Pete 😄 It’s the busy season. All of the birds have finished molting and after a long, hot, dry summer of being down and making do, they can seek greener pastures. Be mindful if you use a humane service, you may notice this time of year sees more activity. Communication is key. The better your client-handler relationship is, the more successful your program will be!
