Wood rot is a funny thing—it’s not just “old wood” that needs to be covered up. 👀

Wood rot is caused by fungi that break down damp wood over time. Sometimes, deteriorating wood gets wrapped in metal flashing with the idea that covering it will solve the problem. But if moisture is still getting in—or gets trapped behind that flashing—the conditions that caused the rot are still there, and the damage can continue out of sight.

That means what looks like a small problem on the outside can turn into a much larger repair underneath.

A simple inspection can help catch wood rot and moisture problems early, before they have the chance to become a much more expensive repair.

Notice a soft, crumbling, or discolored spot around your exterior door frame? Don’t just paint over it!

Wood rot happens when wood is repeatedly exposed to moisture and the areas around exterior doors can be especially vulnerable. Once the wood begins to deteriorate, the damage can continue to spread if the source of the moisture isn’t addressed.

Wood rot is not always obvious at first! Peeling paint, dark or discolored areas, cracking, or wood that feels soft when pressed can all be signs that something is going on underneath the surface.

The good news? Finding wood rot doesn’t necessarily mean replacing your entire door. Depending on the extent of the damage, the affected portion of the frame or trim may be able to be repaired or replaced.

The better news? If the extent of your door frame’s wood rot does require a more extensive repair, we can help with that too!
