Chainbuster Forecast
9:28 AM Friday, May 22, 2026

Potential Hazards
Today…Widespread thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight.
Saturday…Scattered morning thunderstorms, widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Changes to the Previous Forecast
Minor tweaks to the timing of the rain and thunderstorms on Saturday.

Discussion
The axis of moisture is currently over central Alabama and Mississippi. This will shift east today moving over the racecourse later this afternoon and tonight. Some models are showing an all-day rain and thunderstorm scenario on Saturday. However, the majority of the models are suggesting a wave of rain and thunderstorms moving across the racecourse between midnight tonight and 7 AM Saturday. Then there will be a lull in the activity for the rest of the morning and then showers and thunderstorms regenerating Saturday afternoon. This is consistent with previous model runs and I have trended my forecast in this manner.

Rainfall amounts will be the heaviest tonight with the amounts of around 1.00” by Saturday morning. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.50” are possible during the day Saturday, mainly in the afternoon. Isolated rainfall amounts could be higher in the stronger thunderstorms.

Chainbuster Forecast
7:59 AM Thursday, May 21, 2026

…HEAVY RAIN POSSIBLE FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY…

Potential Hazards
Friday…Widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Saturday…Scattered morning thunderstorms, widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Changes to the Previous Forecast
Increased the chances of rain Friday and Saturday.
Increased the rainfall amounts Friday and Saturday.

Discussion
Major changes to the forecast as all models are increasing the coverage of rain as well as the rainfall amounts, beginning Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday. An upper level disturbance will move out of the Gulf and across Georgia Friday and Saturday. This will collide with a backdoor front that will stall across north Georgia. This will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain across much of north and central Georgia beginning Friday afternoon and continuing into Friday night and Saturday. A few storms could be strong to severe Friday afternoon with the main threat being damaging winds.

While I am forecast total rainfall around 1.00”, some of the stronger storms could push that total close to 2.00”.

Chainbuster Forecast
9:03 AM Tuesday, May 19, 2026

Potential Hazards
Friday…Scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
Saturday…Scattered afternoon thunderstorms.

Changes to the Previous Forecast
Increased the chances of rain Friday and Saturday.

Discussion
The forecast remains mostly unchanged through Thursday. A backdoor cold front will move across the Carolinas and into northeast Georgia Friday and then stall just north of Monticello on Saturday. This will put Monticello on the warm and unstable side of the front. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along this boundary, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours on Friday and Saturday. Some storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain.

Friday…Scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
Saturday…Scattered afternoon thunderstorms.

Discussion
The week will start out hot and humid, but dry. This changes for the last half of the week as Gulf and Atlantic moisture spread into the state bringing scattered, mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms beginning Thursday and continuing into Saturday.
