🏡 Decluttering & Organizing Checklist Room by Room

Kitchen

Toss expired food, sauces, spices, and snacks.

Donate duplicates (extra utensils, mugs, appliances you don’t use).

Keep counters clear except for daily-use items (coffee maker, toaster).

Group by category: baking, cooking, snacks, breakfast.

Use drawer dividers for utensils and clear bins for pantry items.

Living Room

Remove items that don’t belong (cups, shoes, toys).

Limit decorative items to a few favorites (avoid “cluttered cozy”).

Store remotes, chargers, and small electronics in a basket or box.

Designate a spot for blankets (basket or ottoman storage).

Keep flat surfaces (coffee table, TV stand) mostly clear.

Bedroom

Clear nightstands to essentials (lamp, book, glass of water).

Use under-bed storage for off-season clothes or linens.

Sort clothes by keep, donate, toss.

Apply the hanger trick to identify unworn clothes.

Store jewelry, belts, and accessories in organizers or trays.

Bathroom

Toss expired makeup, medicine, and toiletries.

Group products: skincare, haircare, dental, first aid.

Use drawer trays or small bins to avoid “junk drawers.”

Keep counters minimal: soap, toothbrush, daily products.

Store extras in labeled bins or baskets.

Closets

Remove anything that doesn’t fit or you wouldn’t buy again.

Use slim hangers to maximize space.

Sort by type (shirts, pants, dresses) and color for quick access.

Store seasonal items in bins or vacuum bags.

Limit sentimental clothes (concert tees, old uniforms) to one box.

Office / Paperwork

Go digital when possible (scan documents).

Shred outdated bills and statements.

File important documents (taxes, medical, legal) in labeled folders.

Keep your desk clear of more than 3–5 items.

Create a small “inbox” for paper that needs attention.

Entryway

Designate a landing zone for keys, wallet, bag, and shoes.

Use hooks for coats, hats, or dog leashes.

Keep a small tray for mail — sort daily, don’t let it pile up.

Use a shoe rack or basket to prevent hallway clutter.

Garage / Storage

Donate or toss duplicates, broken, or “someday” tools/equipment.

Group by activity: gardening, sports, tools, car care.

Use wall hooks, pegboards, and shelving for vertical storage.

Label bins clearly so you don’t “re-buy” things you already own.

Reassess stored holiday items each year — keep only what you love.

✨ Pro tip: Do one room at a time (or even one drawer) and celebrate small wins 🩷💜

📌 Decluttering Extras

Set a timer (10–20 minutes): Work in short bursts so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Take photos of sentimental items: Keep the memory without holding onto every object.

Ask “Would I buy this again today?” If not, it may be time to let it go.

Use the hanger trick: Hang clothes with the hanger facing backward; after wearing, turn it forward. In 6–12 months, donate what’s still backward.

Deal with paper clutter fast: Go digital when possible. Sort incoming mail immediately: toss, file, ect.

📦 Organizing Extras

Vertical space is your friend: Use shelves, hooks, or wall organizers instead of crowding flat surfaces.

Think zones: Group items by activity — e.g., a “coffee zone” with mugs, filters, and beans together.

Clear containers: Let you see what’s inside at a glance (great for pantry, craft, and bathroom items).

“Prime real estate” rule: Store the most-used items between waist and shoulder height.

Labels are for everyone: Even if you know where things go, labels help family/roommates stay consistent.

🧠 Mindset & Habits

Don’t organize clutter: Always declutter before buying bins or systems.

Practice the “landing zone” habit: Create a set spot for keys, wallet, phone, or bag so they never get lost.

Declutter seasonally: Use changes in season (spring, fall) as natural reminders to purge.

Future self test: Ask, “Will future me thank me for keeping this, or for letting it go?”

Progress over perfection: Even small steps make a big difference — aim for “better,” not “Pinterest-perfect.”

De-cluttering Basics

I go through my house every 6 months, but I recommend doing it atleast once a year. I follow the following basic rules when I am de-cluttering/organizing...

📌 If you don't use it-Lose it ➡️ If you haven't used it or wore it in atleast a year, you're probably never going to. Exceptions would be sentimental, seasonal and emergency items.
📌 One in-One out rule ➡️ When you bring something new into your home, let go of something similar.
📌 If it's broke, rusted or worn beyond wear or use it should go.
📌 If it's expired, let it go. This includes food, medication/creams, health and beauty products, cleaning products and anything that has an expiration date, shelf life or use by date.
📌 The 20/20 rule ➡️ If you can replace it in under 20 minutes for under $20, you don’t need to hang onto it “just in case.”
📌 5 second decision ➡️ When handling an item, decide within 5 seconds: keep, donate, toss, or relocate.
📌 The 80/20 rule ➡️ We use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. Focus on keeping that 20%.

Organizing Tips
📌 Start small ➡️ Begin with one drawer, one shelf, or one surface. Small wins build momentum.
📌 Use the 4-box method ➡️ Label boxes: Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate. This makes decisions clearer.
📌 Like with like ➡️ Store similar items together so you always know where to find them (e.g., all cleaning supplies in one spot).
📌 Visible & accessible ➡️ Everyday items should be easy to reach; rarely used items can be higher up or stored away.
📌 Containers & labels ➡️ Bins, baskets, and labels help create boundaries and reduce clutter creep.
📌 Set limits ➡️ Designate a physical space (one shelf, one bin). When it’s full, that’s the limit.
📌 Declutter before organizing ➡️ Don’t waste time or money organizing things you don’t actually need.
📌 Do daily resets ➡️ Spend 5–10 minutes putting things back where they belong each evening.

Mindset Shifts
📌 Memories live in you, not objects ➡️ Letting go of items doesn’t erase the memories.
📌 Clutter is postponed decisions ➡️ Act on things now instead of saving them for later.
📌 “Someday” rarely comes ➡️ Be realistic about what you will actually use.

Tips that we do monthly in our home to keep things cleaned and maintained...
📌 Clean garbage disposal using garbage disposal cleaner or vinegar/baking soda. Afterwards take the sink splash guard up, clean it and around the sink hole.
📌 Run dishwasher through a cycle using dishwasher cleaner or vinegar/baking soda. If you use a dish drainer, put it in the dishwasher during this cleaning cycle.
📌 Run vinegar through your coffee pot, rinse by running water through a few times after, take all removable parts off and wash, wipe down entire machine.
📌 Wash all bath, kitchen, and entry way rugs, air dry. Then run washer through a cleaning cycle using washing machine cleaner or vinegar/baking soda.
📌 Wash all couch blankets, mattress toppers, pillow protectors etc.
📌 Wash shower curtains.
📌 Clean hair out of all tub and shower drains.
📌 Check your furnace air filter and replace if needed.
📌 Test all smoke alarms.
📌 Run water in rarely used sinks, tubs and showers.
📌 Go through refrigerator, freezer and cabinets and throw out anything that is expired. This is also a great time to wipe down any dirty areas.
📌 Clean stove pans, hood range and oven.
📌 Wipe down inside and outside of your garbage can using a good cleaner.
📌 Dust ceiling fans and blinds. Sweep or vacuum under large furniture and appliances. Vacuum upholstery and under cushions.
