Day 2 is complete — the stumps are taken care of.

After removing a large amount of volunteer trees and brush from around this single-family investment property on Day 1, we returned to handle the remaining stumps.

The stumps included Bradford pears, mulberries, honeysuckle, and other volunteer trees and brush that had established themselves throughout the property’s ornamental planting beds.

We approached each stump based on its location and the conditions around it.

🌳 Stump grinding: Stumps with adequate clearance were ground mechanically.

🪚 Stump removal: Where appropriate, some stumps could be cut and removed rather than ground.

🏠 Stump treatment: Stumps located too close to the house, concrete driveway, sidewalks, or steps could not safely be handled with the stump grinder. These were cut as close to the ground as practical and treated.

One large mulberry required additional caution. We were concerned about a sewer cleanout running along or beneath part of the stump, so we intentionally did not grind as deeply as we otherwise might have. We stopped at approximately four inches below the planting-bed surface rather than risking damage to something underground.

That’s one reason professional stump work isn’t simply a matter of putting a grinder on every stump and going as deep as possible.

The location of the stump, nearby structures, concrete, access, and potential underground infrastructure all matter.

All of the areas involved in this project were ornamental planting areas.

Three crabapple trees removed from a Noblesville property — two different areas, two very different reasons for removal.

We recently returned to a Noblesville homeowner’s property for the third project we’ve completed for this repeat customer.

🌳 Two crabapple trees were located in a larger backyard area. The homeowner is planning to return that portion of the yard to grass, so removing the trees and grinding the stumps was the first step toward reclaiming the space.

🌳 The third crabapple was growing in the narrow space between the customer’s house and the neighbor’s house. It had outgrown the area and was becoming a constant maintenance issue. Branches regularly had to be cut back from both roofs, while AC units were located directly beneath the tree.

In that situation, removal made more sense than continuing to fight the tree’s growth in a space where it simply didn’t fit.

We removed all three crabapple trees and ground all three stumps, leaving both areas ready for their next use.

Does cutting your own brush actually save money?

Today’s project involved several different cleanup tasks for one homeowner:

• Removal of a large pile of brush
• Clearing brush and other vegetation behind the house to prepare an area for future flower planting
• Removing this season’s vegetation from raised garden beds

The brush pile is worth talking about because it’s something homeowners often misunderstand.

During our main season, Big Boy Services generally focuses on brush cutting and vegetation clearing rather than competing for standalone pickup of large piles of brush. For a large pile, the majority of the cost is often not the cutting—it’s the loading, handling, transportation, and disposal.

That’s why we’re more willing to take on standalone brush-pile removal during the winter months.

If you’ve already cut a large amount of brush and piled it up, you may assume you’ve saved money by doing the cutting yourself. But depending on the size and density of the pile, you may not have.

A large brush pile can take significant time to load and transport. It also requires the right equipment and somewhere appropriate to unload it.

In some cases, it makes more financial sense to have the contractor cut the brush, load it, and haul it away as part of the same project.

The takeaway: Don’t just compare the cost of cutting brush. Compare the cost of cutting + piling + loading + hauling + disposal.

A damaged tree in a Northside Indianapolis HOA common area needed to come down—and the project didn’t stop with tree removal.

Big Boy Services handled the complete project from removal through site preparation:

A vacant property can change quickly when volunteer trees, invasive brush, and neglected planting beds are left unchecked.

We just completed Day 1 of a two-day property cleanup involving extensive volunteer tree and brush removal around a single-family investment property.

Bradford pears, mulberries, honeysuckle, and other unwanted growth had taken over the decorative planter beds around the home. In several areas, the vegetation had grown large enough to obscure the exterior of the house.

Our crew removed the growth from the ground up and hauled away approximately two dump trailers of material.

The next step is the stump work. After submitting the utility locate, we’ll return Friday to address the remaining stumps using the appropriate method for each location.

Some can be handled with our stump grinder. Others are positioned too close to the house, driveway, sidewalks, or other structures for mechanical grinding, so they’ll require cutting and digging or another appropriate treatment method.

For stumps that cannot safely be ground or removed because of their location, we may cut them as close to the ground as practical and treat the remaining growth with a glyphosate solution where appropriate.

Today, Big Boy Services completed a brush cutting and limb removal project along the western border of a long pond for a condo association in Fishers, Indiana.

The before-and-after difference is dramatic.

Overgrown areas were opened up, vegetation was cut back, and the pond edge now has a much cleaner appearance. The project specifications did not include several large limbs hanging over the pond, but we removed them anyway because leaving them behind would have made the finished work look incomplete.

We didn’t submit a change order. We didn’t add it to the invoice. We just took care of it.

That’s the way we believe property maintenance should be handled.

It was also a tough week to be outside. Temperatures have been in the mid to upper 90s, and today’s heat index was around 105–110°. The crew pushed through another hot week, and got this Fishers community association project completed.

A small job. A BIG transformation. 🌿➡️🌳

This backyard corner in northeast Indianapolis had been taken over by honeysuckle and vines. The vines had grown over the honeysuckle, creating a tangled wall of vegetation roughly 10–12 feet high.

The homeowner wanted to clean up the area, but we didn’t recommend removing everything.

Instead, the plan was to:

🌿 Remove the vines
✂️ Cut the honeysuckle back to about five feet and shape it
🌳 Preserve the trees worth keeping

We kept a tall maple tree, preserved a dogwood we already knew about, and even discovered another dogwood hidden in the middle of the overgrowth!

The result is a much cleaner, more intentional backyard corner while still preserving the trees the homeowner wanted to keep.

This is exactly why every overgrown area should be evaluated before simply cutting everything down. Sometimes there are good trees and valuable plants hiding behind years of overgrowth.

A little before-and-after work from a recent honeysuckle and brush cutback project for a north side Indianapolis condo association.

This project included multiple areas throughout the community, but the video shows two of the biggest transformations.

🏘️ Area 1: Around a standalone garage building
We cut the overgrown honeysuckle and brush back approximately 3–4 feet from the gutter line, giving the building and surrounding area some much-needed clearance.

🌳 Area 2: Along a large common area bordering the woods
We cut the brush and honeysuckle back to the woods line and raised the surrounding growth approximately 12–14 feet. Any tree limbs extending into the area were also trimmed up to 10 feet and below.

The difference is incredible. What was once overgrown and closing in on the common areas is now open, cleaner, and much easier to maintain.

Now is a great time for community associations and homeowners to start thinking about winter projects. Brush cutbacks, invasive honeysuckle removal, overgrowth clearing, and other outdoor cleanup projects can be a great fit for the winter months.

🚧 Before & After: Commercial Parking Lot Brush Cutting in the Geist Area

Overgrown vegetation was taking over portions of this commercial property, including honeysuckle and vines growing out over the parking areas.

To minimize disruption for tenants and businesses, we scheduled this project for a Saturday.

Our work included:

🌿 Cutting honeysuckle, vines, and brush back approximately 1 foot from the parking lot curbs
♿ Clearing vegetation so handicap parking signs were visible
🏢 Cutting back brush and limbs from the corner of the building near several AC units
🚛 Loading and hauling all brush and debris off the property

Reclaiming 7–10 Feet of Backyard From Honeysuckle & Brush

Today, Big Boy Services was on the northwest side of Indianapolis helping homeowners reclaim approximately 7–10 feet of backyard space that had been overtaken by honeysuckle and brush.

The backyard borders a wooded area, and over time, honeysuckle, small trees and other vegetation had moved beyond the intended grass line.

Our work included:

* Cutting back honeysuckle
* Removing small trees approximately 1.5” in diameter and smaller
* Cutting back overgrown brush
* Removing leaves, logs, sticks and other ground debris
* Cleaning up the entire edge of the backyard

The homeowners plan to establish grass in the reclaimed area, so we’ll be returning tomorrow to install topsoil and give them a clean starting point for their lawn project.

If you’re considering reclaiming an area like this, think about maintenance before you have the work done.

Honeysuckle and brush removal isn’t necessarily a one-time solution. Without a realistic maintenance plan, vegetation can begin moving back into the area—and you may find yourself paying for the same reclamation project again in a few years.

A good plan might involve periodic brush cutting, keeping the new grass line maintained, removing new honeysuckle growth and addressing volunteer trees before they become larger problems.
