My old system leaks the older R410A refrigerant and every recharge costs more. Is it worth it?

This is a fair question, and the honest answer is that the math has shifted against older systems. Here is what changed.

As of 2025, the industry moved away from R410A to a newer refrigerant. R410A is not banned, and your system will keep running on it, but production has wound down, so the price keeps climbing. What used to be a manageable recharge now costs noticeably more, and it is only heading one direction.

Now stack that on top of a system that is already leaking. A recharge does not fix a leak, it just tops off refrigerant that is going to escape again. So you are paying more and more for a temporary patch on a unit that keeps losing charge.

Here is the way we think about it with you. If the system is newer and the leak is small and repairable, fixing it can make sense. How much space does my outdoor unit need to breathe, and does clutter around it matter?

It matters more than most people think. Your outdoor unit pulls in air and dumps heat out through the top and sides, so it needs open space to do its job. Crowd it, and you are quietly making it work harder.

A good rule is at least two feet of clear space on all sides, and several feet of open air above it. Now walk outside and look at yours. Are shrubs creeping in around it? A stack of yard tools, a trash bin, or a garden hose leaning against it? Tall grass and weeds growing up through the base? All of that traps heat and blocks airflow.

When the unit cannot breathe, it cannot release heat properly. The system runs longer, your bills climb, and the extra strain wears out parts before their time. A choked condenser is behind more summer breakdowns than folks realize.

The fix takes five minutes. Clear anything within arm's reach, pull the weeds around the base, and gently brush the debris off the top grille.

This is what our commercial work looks like behind the scenes. Spiral metal ductwork run clean along the steel beams, sized and routed to move air evenly through a large open space long before the walls and ceiling ever go up.

How often do I really need to change my filter when the system never shuts off?

The old advice of changing your filter every 90 days assumes your AC gets a break. In a Central Texas summer, it does not. When your system is running almost around the clock, that filter is working overtime, so it clogs a lot faster than the package suggests.

Here is a more realistic rule for peak season. Check a standard one inch filter every month, and plan to swap it every 30 days while the system runs this hard. Thicker four or five inch media filters last longer, but summer is not the time to stretch them to the limit.

A few things make you change it even sooner. Pets in the house, allergies, recent construction dust, or simply living where the pollen and dust are heavy all shorten a filter's life.

And this is not just about air quality. A clogged filter chokes airflow, forces the system to work harder, drives up your bill, and can freeze the coil until the whole thing stops cooling. That five dollar filter is the cheapest protection your system has.

A storm came through and I think it hit my outdoor unit. How do I know if it is damaged?

Our afternoon storms roll in fast and hit hard, so it is a fair worry. Here is how to check your unit safely once things calm down.

Start with a look, not a touch. Walk out and inspect the condenser for obvious damage. Bent or flattened fins, dents in the cabinet, fallen branches or debris resting on top, or standing water higher than the unit's base are all worth noting.

Then test how it runs. Set your thermostat to cool and listen. Loud rattling, grinding, or buzzing that was not there before, a fan that will not spin, or a system that trips the breaker the moment it kicks on all point to storm damage.

Also think about power. A nearby lightning strike or a surge when the electricity flickered can quietly fry the control board or capacitor, even when the outside of the unit looks perfectly fine.

Here is the safe rule. If the unit is making new noises, will not start, or keeps tripping the breaker, shut it off and leave it off. Running a damaged system only turns a small repair into a big one.

Is it cheaper to leave the AC running or shut it off while I am at work?

This one sparks plenty of debate, so let us clear it up. In a Central Texas summer, the smart move is not to shut it off completely. It is to let it up a few degrees.

Here is the thinking. If you kill the AC entirely on a 100 degree day, your house does not just get warm, it soaks up heat through the walls, the attic, and the furniture for hours. When you come home and drop the thermostat, the system has to claw all of that heat back out at once, running flat out during the hottest, most expensive part of the day. Any savings you banked while you were gone gets erased.

The better play is a setback. Nudge the thermostat up to around 78 or so while the house is empty, then let it return to your comfort setting before you get home. Your system coasts through the day instead of shutting down cold, and it never has to fight its way out of a deep hole.
