From the WA Design Archives

Great landscapes have a way of feeling timeless.

Looking back at some of WA Design’s earlier work, many of the principles that continue to guide our practice today were already taking shape: working with the character of the site, creating meaningful connections between people and nature, and designing landscapes that are as experiential as they are beautiful.

In this residential project, water became the organizing element of the landscape; moving through a series of pools, streams, waterfalls, stone crossings, and intimate garden spaces. Natural stone and layered tropical planting soften the architecture and create a sense of discovery as you move through the property.

That philosophy remains central to WA Design today: creating site-responsive environments that balance design craft, function, environmental stewardship, and long-term value.

Every great space starts with an idea, and sometimes, a sketch.

At WA Design, these conceptual drawings are where vision begins to take shape. They show how architecture, landscape, circulation, and gathering spaces work together before a project moves into the finer details.

In this set: a tree-lined green between homes, a courtyard garden, a fireside patio, and a fountain plaza. Each shows how people might move through and use a space.

From residential communities to gardens, event venues, and outdoor living environments, our goal is to create places that feel intentional, connected, and memorable.

A look behind the scenes at how we use renderings to develop and communicate a design.

For the Dark Cave Retreat, these views help us study grading, materials, planting, lighting, and the relationship between the retreat spaces and the surrounding landscape. From the stacked stone walls and native plantings tucked into the hillside, to the elevated yurt overlooking it all, every element is tested in 3D before it's ever built.

Day and night renderings also help us understand the full experience of the site — from quiet solitude in darkness, with the glow of exterior lighting guiding you to each door beneath a blanket of stars, to the beauty of nature when emerging back into the light.

Renderings aren't just presentation pieces — they're part of how we test, refine, and bring a design to life. It's design, tested twice: once under the sun, once under the stars.

This pickleball amenity brings together active play, generous shade, and open green space, all tied together by layered landscaping that makes the whole area feel like it belongs together. Courts for competition. Turf and picnic tables for the crowd that gathers to watch, wait their turn, or just be outside together. It's a space that works before the match starts and long after it ends.
