Let’s support those who support us!

Good morning Greenport Voters! Tonight from 6pm - 9pm is the vote for the addition to our Becraft Pumper Co. No. 2. The Board of Fire Commission, the Chief officers, and the members are asking for your support of this long overdue project. We see a lot of talk of the building going around, both negative and positive. Some of those comments and posts have incorrect or misleading information. We would like to take a moment to talk about the FACTS of the project.

While consolidation of stations is possible in the future, this would never include consolidation of the Becraft station. The experts that have done surveys of our fire district agree that this station needs to remain at that end of Town.

The current bays at Becraft were built on clay and the footings of the westerly most bay are failing, causing the bay to separate from the rest of the building. It will continue to fail. If we do not replace the bays down there, the trucks may need to be relocated. This WILL impact homeowner’s insurance for the residents of that area of the Town as well as the entire Town.

The proposed project, as explained in the flyer above, is to build new bays only. The steel building will be 60’ x 60’ allowing amble space for the current apparatus and the support items required by NYS code (ADA bathrooms, decontamination area, and gear lockers). The proposed bays are a steel building with a facade. The failing bay will be demolished as part of the project. The existing firehouse building will remain and the siding will be replaced as the current stucco siding is cracking and is not energy efficient. The new bays will be built on the opposite side of the building, where the ground is comprised of rock and not clay.

Per two engineers, there is no ability to permanently repair the current bays due to the clay soil. Not to mention, the fire trucks already barely fit in the building.

We are asking for a bond of $3,500,000. This is a worst case scenario in case bids come in higher than anticipated or there are unforeseen expenses during the project. We want to ensure we are covered and want to prevent from coming back to the voters for increased funding. The engineer is currently estimating the project will be around $2,800,000 plus soft costs. The Board of Fire Commission does have reserve funds ear marked for the project and the project was promised a $250,000 grant. At the conclusion of the project, whatever funds were not used for the project will be paid onto the principle of the bond.

Lastly, our annual budget is public information and printed on all of the tax bills. Our budget is not $1,000,000 annually. The proposed budget for 2026 is $856,000. This is used for maintenance, operation, and repairs to our three stations as well as maintenance and repairs to our fleet of 12 vehicles including fire trucks and specialty response vehicles.

We greatly appreciate your support of our Department!
