Our wheelhouse is typically furniture but we're working on a special project for one of our favorite collaborators.

What do you think it might be? (Hint: It's not furniture!)

Did you know today is International Coffee Day?

Wednesday Wisdom πŸ’‘| Not All Walnut Looks the Same

Take a look at these two tabletops. Both are Walnut, but there's a pretty noticeable difference (aside from the room lighting).

The lighter areas you see in the first table are sapwood, the younger, outer portion of the tree. The darker brown is heartwood, the older wood found toward the center of the tree.

Neither is "better" or "worse". It really comes down to the look you're after. A mix of heartwood and sapwood creates more contrast and natural variation, while selecting primarily heartwood gives you that more consistent, rich brown Walnut appearance.

So why does heartwood only Walnut typically cost more?

Because a tree naturally contains both. To produce a piece with little to no sapwood, the lumber has to be more selectively sourced and boards may need to be chosen or cut specifically for their heartwood content. That means less usable material for the desired look, more selection, and ultimately more cost.

And there's an important distinction: paying more for heartwood only Walnut doesn't necessarily mean you're buying higher quality Walnut. You're paying for a more selective aesthetic.

Just another example of why two pieces made from the exact same wood species (and even tree) can look, and be priced, very differently. πŸͺ΅

This week our custom audio equipment shelving unit is really starting to take shape.

Our client came to us looking for a creative way to display the collection she and her husband have built over the years - vinyl records, CDs, players, speakers and all. One thing she knew from the start was that she wanted live edge wood incorporated into the design.

From there, everything was designed around exacly what will live on each shelf. The dimensions are specific to their equipment and collections, and we had metal custom fabricated by Wildfire Design Co. to not only complement the live edge but also keep those vinyls and CDs safely in place.

It's a perfect example of designing furniture around what you actually need it to do.

Still lots of work left to do but we're getting closer. Stay tuned to see the finished piece!

Wednesday Wisdom πŸ’‘| Why Samples Matter

One concern we hear pretty often is, "I just want to make sure it works with everything already in my space."

And we completely understand. Choosing a wood species or finish from a photo on a screen is very different from seeing it next to your floors, cabinets, walls, or other furniture.

That's why samples can be such an important part of the design process. We'll often create a few options for clients to see in their actual space, hand delivering them locally or shipping them if they're farther away.

Then comes the important part: take your time with them.
Move them around. Look at them during the day and at night. Hold them next to the other colors and materials in the room. You might be surprised which one you end up liking best!

There is one thing we always remind clients, though: a sample is a guide, not an exact preview of the finished piece. Wood naturally varies from board to board, and a small sample only shows a few inches of grain and color. Once that becomes an 8-foot dining table, a mantel, or a large desk, you're going to see more of the wood's natural variation and character. The overall look should still complement the sample you chose, but it won't be an exact copy, and that's part of the beauty of real wood.

Custom design involves a lot of comparing, discussing, tweaking, and sometimes changing your mind through the design phase. Samples simply give you one more tool to feel comfortable with those decisions.

A pretty small piece of wood can make a pretty big decision a whole lot easier πŸͺ΅
