Shower niches are legitimately one of the more frequent waterproofing failure points in showers. When you recess storage into a shower wall, you create extra corners, seams, and horizontal surfaces where water can pe*****te if not handled carefully. Without proper waterproof membrane coverage on every angle, water can seep through tile grout and behind the niche into wall cavities, potentially causing mold, insulation damage, and structural rot.

Most niche leaks stem from issues like flat shelves that allow water to pool, failing to waterproof internal corners, or using incompatible membrane systems. Integrating the niche directly with the shower’s waterproofing system and ensuring slope toward the interior helps reduce those risks.

A shower liner has to sit on a pre-sloped mortar bed so any water that sneaks past your grout flows straight to the drain. If it’s flat, water just pools under the liner and eats away at the mortar and framing over time.

Cheap valves and fixtures can fail prematurely, low-quality moisture-resistant drywall or regular gypsum board may sag, warp, or grow mold, and polished or slippery tiles without a proper slip-resistance rating create safety hazards. Investing slightly more in quality waterproofing membranes, moisture-resistant drywall, reliable valves, and slip-rated tile protects your renovation, prevents water damage, and ensures your bathroom remains safe and functional.

Most shower leaks are caused by failures in the waterproofing system rather than the tile or grout itself. Tile and grout are porous and allow water to pass through. Without a continuous waterproofing membrane behind your tile, water reaches the substrate and framing, often remaining hidden for months or even years before mold, rot, or stains appear.

Common mistakes that lead to leaks include skipping the waterproofing membrane, using incompatible products that fail to bond, not sealing fasteners, corners, niches, or penetrations, and rushing the waterproofing before materials are fully cured. Even small gaps become major problems when moisture accumulates over time.

Bathroom exhaust fans are not optional if you want a healthy, lasting space. Bathrooms produce a lot of moisture, and without proper ventilation, humidity lingers on ceilings, walls, mirrors, and trim. This creates the perfect conditions for mold, mildew, peeling paint, and even wood rot.

Industry standards recommend sizing your fan based on the square footage of your bathroom. Typically, this is about 1 CFM per square foot. A 7 by 10-foot bathroom needs at least 70 CFM, while larger spaces often require 100 to 150 CFM or multiple fans to handle higher moisture loads.

Exhaust fans must vent directly to the outside. Venting into an attic or crawlspace allows moisture to accumulate in insulation and framing, which causes hidden mold and structural issues over time. Correct fan sizing and installation protect your home’s structure and indoor air quality.
