creating food sources is one of the most rewarding parts of building a sustainable garden. getting to see wildlife show up the second you give them something to work with šŸ˜ and it doesn’t have to be your whole yard - it’s mostly about shifting what you’re planting and what you’re letting stay.

native plants to our ecoregions already have the relationships built in with the local wildlife. a non-native ornamental can look beautiful and feed almost nothing. sometimes the biggest shift we have to make is our perception of beauty

people have always figured out how to grow food in the spaces they had. indigenous peoples who cultivated and shaped the amazon. market growers in france working small plots intensively. victory gardens during world war two that turned front yards into food.

looking back at history, we are one of the most disconnected generations from our food sources - and there has never been a more important time to reconnect with the land and how we nourish ourselves.

, whose work centers climate hope and the idea that we already have the solutions we need - talks about climate victory gardens as part of that answer. i believe her!

for me it comes back to food sovereignty and remembering that we are part of these ecosystems, not separate from them šŸ’ž

This isn’t my usual content, but I feel called to say something. I left my career in education to start my garden design business - not because I stopped loving it, but because I watched learning disappear from classrooms in real time. And not because of bad teachers… because of the STAAR test.

I sat in rooms nearly in tears, fighting for kids who weren’t being seen as future members of our communities - only as a test score.

I live in HISD. A district that lost its elected school board because of this test. My vote has no voice in my own neighborhood schools.

If we want a functioning society in Texas, this has to change. Vote Gina Hinojosa for governoršŸ—³ļø

Pond update! šŸŸšŸ’§ Back in October I turned a stock tank into a little backyard pond experiment - aquatic plants, fish, algae and unbeknownst to me lots of caterpillars. We’ve had some wins and some losses.

Unfortunately we lost two fish along the way - I think my little helpers loved them a little too much at feeding time. RIP to those two šŸ™ I take fish husbandry seriously, so I’m making sure the rest of us are going to survive the summer together.

I’ve been working on recreating what a natural pond ecosystem actually looks like - letting the plants and insects do the work instead of relying on me (or my kids) to manage it. And I’ve loved it so much that I’m adding a second cistern - no fish this time, just aquatic plants to catch rainwater.

Thanks for this awesome rain catchment idea!

year one, project seven of seven. the jewelsford project - a backyard designed around what matters most to this family. a prayer garden and grotto, hexagonal kitchen garden, fire pit with a long view, and a cottage-style patio built to flex with everyday life

houston is getting lapped by austin when it comes to certified wildlife habitats and that stat is what sent me down a rabbit hole that ended up becoming my permaculture design capstone

it turns out your yard doesn’t have to be big or fancy to be part of the solution. it just needs five things

in this series, I’ll break down all five šŸ¦ā€ā¬›āœØšŸŒ» and by the end you’ll know exactly what your yard is missing and how to fix it

With my designs, I try to focus on its relationship with the larger ecosystem, even with food gardens.

For example, a fruit tree isn’t just a fruit tree - in my garden, the canopies shade the raised beds below it, feeds wildlife, produces food, and keeps me out of the garden in the middle of a Houston summer 🄵

Low maintenance gardens are all about design. My permaculture background is basically just asking every plant to do more than one thing, and letting the system take care of itself over time.

A lil look at my attempt at a climate victory garden šŸ’•šŸŒ

year one, project six of seven. the carriage run project - three quarters of an acre that will be installed over time. a lot of existing trees on this property, so we leaned into that - mulched areas with woodland style planting that works with what’s already there instead of against it.

the kitchen garden had to be designed around septic tanks because you always have to be able to access those!

there’s also a new perennial movement inspired garden that houses a boardwalk and a fire pit. very fun project!

Every year I end up with a ton of grapevine cuttings. Instead of throwing them out, I built a wattle fence (imperfect by English garden standards) around one of my raised beds. Mainly as a mindful meditation practice in this crazy world of ours.

Some awesome permaculture-esque benefits - it insulates the soil, is prime real estate for lizards, frogs, and lacewings, and is kinda cute šŸ’•

Growing food in an urban space can be a great opportunity to get creative - especially when we’re thinking through systems design

year one, project five of seven. this one was about making the landscaping feel like it actually belongs to the house - a neo-american federal style home that needed a woodland themed foundation planting to match. we incorporated their existing plants and built around them.

we added formality with a wider portico landing and a new pathway lined with dwarf yaupon holly hedge.

they didn’t have a gate to the garage or a mudroom entrance, so we established that. the pergola had brick underneath it creating a drainage issue, so we plan on raising the cement path, rebuilding the pergola, and using those bricks to create a dining space right next to it.

outdoor rooms include a play area under an established oak, a kitchen garden, a small dining nook, and a pond. the client wanted something peaceful to look out at every day - enter the wildlife pond.

ponds are the best 🐸 but i may just be in my frog and toad era
