Crepe Murder refers to an improper pruning technique for a Crepe Myrtle's . It usually means cutting the main branches down to about 6–10 ft every year at a blunt, uniform height. But is “Crepe Murder” really that bad?
Pruning that heavily isn’t ideal for tree health because Crepe Myrtles store their growth buds in older branches. Removing them creates slow-healing wounds, unattractive knuckles or knots, and weak new branches.

At Arbor Source, we never support Crepe Murder. Crepe Myrtles can be left to grow naturally with very little intervention. Just keep an eye out for common issues like aphids and the sooty mold they leave behind.
However, intentional pruning on Crepe Myrtles may be exactly what you need depending on your goals.

Follow our page or call 832-671-0331 for Crepe Myrtle pruning consultations.

Tree appearance reflects tree health.
Sooty mold signals active insect activity.
This black coating grows on the sugary residue left behind by insects like aphids, scale, and whiteflies. While it doesn't infect the plant, it blocks sunlight and signals an active pest issue that can weaken tree health over time. 📞Call today for our 6 month treatment option. 832-671-0331

Pests don’t disappear in winter. They slow down, hide, and wait.
In Houston, mild winters mean some pests stay active while others are already setting up for spring. Getting ahead now helps reduce spring pressure before it becomes visible damage.

Our Maintenance Programs are built around early detection and preventative treatments to keep your landscape protected year round.

Now is the time to get on a maintenance program and stay ahead before spring arrives.

Before turning on the sprinklers, check your soil.
Insert your finger 1 to 3 inches deep. If the soil feels dry, give it a watering. If not, hold off. Your lawn doesn’t need it yet.
