WHY AERATING HELPS LAWNS

Grass roots need air, water and nutrients to grow thick, deep and strong. When soil becomes compacted, even slightly, it inhibit the flow of the essentials that support thicker, healthier turf growth. A layer of compacted soil just 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick can make a significant difference in the health and beauty of your lawn.1 Aeration creates holes down into the soil to alleviate compaction so air, water and nutrients can reach grass roots.
Deprived of their basic needs by compacted soil, lawn grasses struggle in stressful situations, such as heat and low rainfall, and lose their healthy, rich color. Grasses gradually thin and eventually die out completely, for lack of the oxygen, water and nutrients available just inches away. Even a single aeration session can open the avenue for these essentials to reach their mark and put your lawn back on an upward trend.

Many landscaping professionals actually practice—and prefer—fall mulching. Fall mulch works like spring mulch to retain soil moisture, suppress w**d growth and protect bare soil from erosion. But it also accomplishes a few more things:

Fall mulch insulates soil, providing a warmer environment for the soil-food web, including earthworms and microbes. Warm soil means these organisms stay active longer into the cold season, improving your soil.

Fall mulch insulates plant roots. In coldest regions, soil may eventually freeze solid in the heart of winter, but in many areas, soil cycles through freezing and thawing all winter long. Those freeze-thaw patterns put stress on anything in the top few inches of soil, including plant roots. Mulch moderates the temperature swing.

By hiring a lawn care service, you’ll get better results and even a guarantee on the work. That’s a guarantee that doesn’t come on a bag or bottle you’d buy at your local hardware or home improvement store.

Convenience:

Plus, you won’t have to do it on your own. Although this may have initially been your goal, more often than not, what seemed like an easy and perhaps even fun endeavor at the start often turns into a chore when one realizes just how much time, skill, and work is actually involved.

Solutions for Tricky Issues:

A professional lawn care service will also have trained technicians who know exactly how to diagnose and solve problems, which can also save you a lot of time and money in the long run. It’s very common for DIYers to misdiagnose issues and waste money not only on products but have damage continue without remedy.

Increased Safety:

Professional lawn care companies often work with cutting edge materials for several years until the manufacturers release them to the public. These products can not only work more effectively, but are also, in some circumstances, safer than some products homeowners have access to.
These professionals are trained and monitored to make sure that they are using approved practices that protect the environment, people and pets.

WHY AND WHEN TO OVERSEED THE LAWN

Overseeding is as simple as it sounds. You plant new grass seed in your lawn’s troubled spots. But its benefits go much deeper. You should consider overseeding because:

It thickens turf, which discourages w**d growth.

It repairs bare areas

It improves the overall strength and vigor of the lawn.

It’s the best way to create a uniform-looking lawn without having to do a full renovation.

One of the best practices you can do for your lawn is to have it aerated and overseeded on a regular basis. This practice reduces soil compaction and brings new life to old roots.

What is aeration?

Aeration is the mechanical removal of soil cores from the lawn. These one to two inch cores are left on top of the lawn and as the cores break down, microbes feed on and break down thatch. Thatch is the spongy and often impervious layer of decaying material between the crown of the grass plants and the soil.
