Nature has been running efficient, self-renewing systems for billions of years.

Marine organisms like mussels and algae create adhesives that are strong, flexible, and biodegradable—able to perform in harsh, wet environments without leaving behind toxic residue. Researchers have now translated that chemistry into a new kind of battery binder, replacing fluorinated materials that release harmful “forever chemicals.”

The result: zinc batteries with 52% higher energy efficiency after 8,000 cycles; longer life, fewer replacements, and a significantly lower environmental footprint.

This is what it looks like to design differently - not just optimizing performance, but rethinking the materials entirely.

Batteries are typically held together by chemicals that don’t easily degrade. However, some marine animals have evolved remarkable natural ways to attach themselves to wet, slippery surfaces.

Those who dare to think wrong, who dare to break free from the mold, pioneer new possibilities in design. Conformity is no longer an option.

BDA is here to spark those creative juices and work with you (and nature) to inspire the future of design!

When technology struggles, nature often already has the answer.

By studying the structure of human lungs, researchers developed a bio-inspired oxygenation device that mimics the flow of blood through capillaries. Instead of forcing efficiency, the design works with the same principles that make natural systems effective—surface area, flow, and exchange.

It’s a reminder that some of the most advanced innovations don’t come from reinventing systems, but from understanding them more deeply.

Tukey reminds us that precision alone isn't enough; it's the synergy between the right question and an approximate answer that truly sparks innovation.

In the name of forward, positive progress, let's prioritize asking the right questions, as they are the catalysts that lead us to profound discoveries and transformative solutions.

Waste isn’t always waste, it can be a resource in the right system.

Researchers are exploring how heat from data centers can be redirected to grow microalgae, which in turn absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis. The result is a closed-loop approach where energy, emissions, and biology work together instead of against each other.

It’s a shift from isolated solutions to integrated systems, designing the way ecosystems function, where outputs become inputs and nothing is wasted.

In the pursuit of progress, we have inadvertently created some complex global challenges. Within this realization lies our greatest strength: the power to resolve what we have set in motion.

We firmly believe biomimicry creates inspiration for moving in the correct direction utilizing nature to inform a more sustainable design for your product, building or more!

Biomimicry Design Alliance

The Biomimicry Design Alliance includes architects, designers, scientists, and innovative technology solutions that are working together to create tools to help make biomimicry more accessible to the architecture community. We translate the site-specific needs of the built environment into biological functions in order to solve the design challenge. And by forming alliances with Denver institutions as Collaborators, we expand the our knowledge base and resources exponentially.

BDA offers consulting services, works on unique research in architectural biomimicry, designs biomimetic projects, as well as educates the public on the possibilities of learning from nature as opposed to controlling it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Biomimicry Design Alliance Associates are a diverse group of people committed to making the built environment complement instead of compete with the planet. Their backgrounds include architecture, biomimicry, ecology, industrial design, sustainability engineering, astrophysics, science education, and illustration.
