Cameron Armstrong Architect Architecture of art and freedom, for a future based on detailed attention to client requirements and intentions

"Open Practice" derives building design from the insights of all participants, and from direct engagement with each project's context, defined as broadly as possible. Since 2004, web-based imaging of the decision process has dramatically improved our collaborations. Design now quickly parallels the responses of clients and contractors to the pictures, drawings and fly-through models regularly pos

ted to their blog-like "progress pages," as well as the face-to-face consensus we develop through close contact.

Our Story

CAA believes in an open practice approach to design that derives solutions from the insights of all participants, and from direct engagement with the building’s context. Its inherent efficiency enables CAA to reach standards of time, cost and aesthetic durability orders of magnitude beyond that of typical construction.

CAA has designed buildings of various kinds, ranging from more than a dozen artist studios (10 constructed as of 2019), to high rise type tower (“mini-rise”). The firm’s residential work has been widely featured in national, and local news media, and recognized by architectural historians and critics.

Using new materials, CAA has been able to drastically extend the life-spans of Texas homes - up to two to three times that of conventional construction. Building maintenance has been sharply reduced. Using new thermal strategies, energy use has declined by up to half since 2000. CAA's focus on discovering and combining such innovations means that clients’ unique design goals can be realized without constraints posed by traditional technologies.
