Located on the island of Crete and built by the advanced Minoan civilization around 1700 BC, the Palace of Knossos contains remarkable technological innovations far beyond its time. One of its most impressive features was an advanced plumbing system that included something truly extraordinary: a working flush toilet with a wooden seat.
This toilet was connected to a complex network of drainage pipes that carried waste away from the palace – an engineering feat that would not be repeated until the modern era. The drainage system also managed rainwater and distributed clean water throughout the complex, demonstrating the Minoans' remarkable understanding of hydraulics and sanitation.

Preparing your sprinkler system for the freeze:

The BACKFLOW PREVENTER in your sprinkler system WILL BREAK IF ICE GETS INSIDE.❄️ It is part of its function and design.

To AVOID BREAKAGE FROM FREEZING, turn off the water on both sides (inlet and outlet) of the backflow preventer and drain it, leaving both sides open. (This might require a 🪛)

After the water drains, cover it with a towel or blanket, and then a plastic trash bag to waterproof it.

For those who are concerned about your plumbing because of the freezing weather this weekend, take a look below:

There are 2 suggestions I always give when asked about preparing for freezes in Houston, depending on whether you are home or planning a trip:

1) IF YOU ARE LEAVING TOWN and believe it will be colder than 30 degrees while you are away, turn off all your water and open all your faucets in and outside the house. Leave them open while you are away; when you return, leave your outside faucets and bathtubs open and close all lavatory and kitchen faucets; turn the water back on. This allows debris to be flushed out of your system;

2) IF YOU ARE HOME during a freeze, any outside faucets and fixtures that are on an outside wall (usually tubs) need to be opened up very slowly, mixing hot and cold water. AN ALTERNATIVE to this is to open your attic door allowing heat into your attic space. Because it gets coldest at the eave of the house, dripping faucets will maintain water movement and better prevent freezing. I have found the old adage "moving water doesn't freeze, and if it does, it wasn't moving fast enough," is true.

And, be aware, water can freeze and thaw inside your pipes, and not cause a break. So, last but not least, PRAY that nothing ever breaks in your house!
