If you have branches growing into or near power lines, do not attempt to trim them yourself. This is extremely dangerous and in many cases requires coordination with the utility company. What you can do is have the trees on your side of the property properly maintained to prevent them from reaching the lines in the first place. Regular trimming is the best prevention. A tree can look perfectly healthy on the outside and be rotting from the inside out. Watch for these warning signs: large fungi or mushrooms growing at the base, sections of bark that sound hollow when you knock on them, holes where branches used to be, and excessive leaning that wasn't there before. A hollow tree can come down without warning, especially in a storm. If something doesn't look right, trust your gut.
