One day on site. One front yard transformed.

The crew brought the river rock in by the truckload, laid the fabric, set the stone and the plantings by hand and finished the beds around the house in fresh mulch. The next morning, with all of the rock and mulch down, the finished look from above: clean curved beds along the road, rock borders around the house and stone running to the front walk.

We built the bluestone walkway too.

Before and after, one site, one day.

The morning started with a rough lot under the trees: thin grass, loose rock and uneven ground. By late afternoon the crew had cleared it, regraded the whole area, spread 80 cubic yards of screened organic topsoil, seeded it with blue tag certified seed, covered it with Penn Mulch with starter fertilizer and lined the road edge with stone. The gravel drive got a clean edge too.

The drainage goes in first. The plantings go on top.

We dug the trench, set the drainage chambers, ran the drain line out to them and packed everything in clean stone. Then we planted over it: new shrubs and trees, fresh curved beds, and every plant set by hand. The water moves underground, and the new beds sit in a yard that drains.

There is no chain driving this aerator.

The Stinger QuadAir 3000 is hydraulically driven, all of it, and Alex rates that as the biggest feature on the machine. No chain is one less part to tension, wear out and replace in the middle of a fall schedule.

The same hydraulics running your forward, your reverse and your turns are split off to drive the tines as well. One system doing both jobs, and less maintenance at the end of a season for it.

The motor is a Kawasaki, standard and easy to service. Stay on top of the oil changes and it will last you.

Most of the seed you waste on an overseeding job gets thrown on the turns.

The Stinger QuadAir 3000 puts the tines on a foot pedal. Foot up and they ride above the turf, foot down and they drop and you are moving, so you can work around beds, gates and tree roots without taking your hands off the controls.

The seed box holds a 50 pound bag and locks shut so no debris falls in on top of it. A computer runs it, and it only drops seed while your foot is on the pedal. That is where the efficiency actually comes from. Nothing gets spread across a driveway, nothing gets dumped while you line up the next pass, and the lawn gets a measured rate instead of a guess.

One man, one truck, maybe a trailer. It is not a cheap machine, but on aeration and seeding it can pay for itself in a season.

Two lawns get the same aeration and seeding. One fills in, one does not. Usually it is the seed.

Look for a BLUETAG certified blend. Certification means over 90 percent of that seed is guaranteed to germinate in suitable conditions, which is the difference between a lawn that thickens and a cheap contractor blend that never comes up. For fall in New Jersey, a tall fescue blend is the most disease and drought tolerant seed you can put down. Bluegrass is good but takes six to eight weeks, so blend it into fescue and let the fescue come up first and shade it. On patio and drainage projects where the lawn has to recover fast, a BLUETAG perennial rye gets you green quickly so nobody is waiting weeks on a muddy yard.

Do that year over year and your lawn will look as good as it can.

An Aeration and seeding in the Fall, is the best thing you can do for a lawn.

If your turf is struggling with bare spots, fall is the textbook window. A machine like this Stinger aerates and seeds in the same pass, which fills a patchy lawn efficiently and opens the soil so fertilizer, water and oxygen reach the root system. Stronger roots, thicker turf, year over year. It's what we use at Farah Landscape Design to promote dream lawns for clients.
