Case Study House: 1.20: A Year of Progress

Well - this month marks the 1 year mark of breaking ground on this crazy family adventure, and we're getting SO close to move-in. With the outside ALMOST 100% (needs another coat of paint...some tile on the front entry...a FUN door color, yet to be decided...and some serious help on our landscaping) we took a look at the 1000's of photos we've taken along the way and grabbed one from various stages of progress and with the help of google photos - we made a quick AUTO-MOVIE...gotta love AUTO! Case Study House: 1.18: Start of the Siding!

Another good productive week at our place. Day One of siding had a pretty serious learning curve associated with it! Between figuring out the "furring strips" (behind the big sheets of siding, we put strips of 1/2 " pressure treated plywood to give the walls siding a gap to drain and breath, so water doesn't get trapped.) and figuring out some pretty complex geometry to miter the corners with the horizontal lap siding, there were some frustrating moments! Case Study House #1.17: Insulation & Drywall - MAKE : Design + Build

Still having fun!! (I think!! Haha)

One of those steps that really makes a project feel like it's coming together is drywall! This was another example of the value of getting multiple bids! One bid for insulation and drywall came in at over $30,000. The price we ended up with was $5,000 for insulation (which included upgrading to R-21 in the walls, upgrading our overhangs to R-38 and the 1st bid wasn't even going to do the garage....oh yeah, and sound insulation around the master suite and the laundry room!). Case Study House #1.16: We Have a Driveway http://wp.me/p4UBi1-7E

Yesterday was one of those days where progress was made all over! Our excavator, Rusty, did our final grading and spread out our base gravel for our driveway We passed our insulation and mechanical system inspections We finished all of the final blocking and framing Finished running cableTV/Ethernet cables Septic company installed their electrical AND the drywall company delivered and stocked each room with drywall, ready to be hung! CASE STUDY HOUSE #1.14: Housewrap for the Christmas Present! http://wp.me/p4UBi1-7n

We were SO close to getting the house all wrapped up for Christmas! The structure of the main house is now 100% wrapped with just 2 sides of the garage that need to be covered. I need to get a final photo of the house completely wrapped - but, I'm kind of loving the BLACK look! Not sure if our neighbors would love it if it stayed black! [ 497 more words. ]

CASE STUDY HOUSE #1.13: A View from Above http://wp.me/p4UBi1-75

It's been a bit since we updated our progress. Things continue to move along, and the views just keep getting better the higher we go! So far the best part of being so hands on with the construction, is being able to make those little tweaks that aren't found in the drawing stage. Little adjustments to align things just right all the way to deciding to remove walls to keep a more open floor plan. [ 112 more words. ]

We're starting to see some real progress moving along! So much so, that a neighbor stopped by while I was working the other day and said..."Oh, now I get it!"... Little do they know... They still have no idea what it will look like! The exterior wall construction will be 2x6 studs with 10 foot ceilings on both the 1st and 2nd floors. [ 95 more words. ]

CASE STUDY HOUSE #1.11: Open Tread Stair Design http://wp.me/p4UBi1-6J

I've been playing with several ideas for the stairs at CSH1.0 (Case Study House 1.0). We definitely want to continue the theme of "open and airy" on the interior - so an open tread stair design was almost a given. But, having never designed or built one, it's been a fun challenge that still has plenty left to be resolved. The wood I ended up finding are 2" planks of Maple and Cherry (found a great woodshop… [ 197 more words. ]

CASE STUDY HOUSE #1.10: Foundation progress! http://wp.me/p4UBi1-6B

Quick photo gallery update showing the current progress. The basement was excavated and the foundation footings poured. Then came the basement walls with window and door openings (luckily Steve was on site and caught them missing 2 windows that I had clearly marked out with red spray paint and even wrote out VENTANA & PUERTA (window/door in spanish). Following a week of curing - 100 trucks of dirt were brought in to build up the grade for a walk out basement with a 1st level garage. [ 38 more words. ]
