Later this month is garlic time in Georgia.

Garlic and short-day onions go in now, grow slow all winter, and come out late spring and early summer. You plant them, mulch them, and mostly leave them alone. The cold does the work.

Break your garlic into cloves the day you plant. Pointy end up. Four to six inches apart. It is not complicated. It just has to get in the ground.

Somebody asked me if it is too late to plant a cover crop. Depends what you plant.

Clover time is pretty much done. That window closed mid October. But rye, wheat, and ryegrass still plant honest from now into mid November. They grow through the cold, hold your soil, and turn under clean in spring.

Plant what the calendar still allows. Stop promising what it does not.

Fall is the time. Not spring, when everybody is rushing and the lime has no time to work. Pull a sample now, get the results back, and you know what that bed actually needs before next year starts.

A test costs a few dollars. Guessing costs you a whole season.

When was the last time you tested your soil? This year, years ago, or never?

My fall garden is teaching me to take better notes, not make bigger guesses.

What held moisture. What got chewed. What took off after a rain. What struggled when the nights stayed warm. Those little observations are how I make the next planting better.

The weather may not follow the old script every year, but the garden will still give you information if you slow down long enough to read it.
