Lending a Helping Hand

Ertl Refrigeration recently headed down to Racine, WI, to lend a helping hand to a company I have a great history with.

They had a project at a food distribution warehouse and needed someone to step in as project lead. I was happy to jump in and work alongside some familiar faces.

We installed a new refrigeration system, and it was great getting back to the bigger jobs — the kind of projects I really enjoy.

Big refrigeration projects are a little bit of everything: refrigeration, piping, electrical, construction, controls, and plenty of problem-solving. There’s nothing quite like seeing it all come together.

Sometimes commercial refrigeration skills come in handy in the residential world too!

Today, Ertl Refrigeration got a call from a homeowner who had a faint propane smell in their basement. They weren’t sure if it was propane, the septic system, a dry floor drain, or something else. After a few unsuccessful attempts to locate the source, they gave us a call.

Because we work on R-290 (propane) refrigeration systems, we carry a leak detector that’s specifically designed to detect propane. Within 5 minutes of arriving, we found the leak, made the repair, and confirmed everything was safe and leak-free!

A preventative maintenance visit isn’t just about cleaning equipment—it’s about catching problems before they become expensive failures.

On this PM, we found a compressor run capacitor that was reading little to no capacitance. The compressor is designed to operate with a 60 MFD run capacitor.

Interestingly, the unit still started and ran because the start capacitor was doing its job. The bad run capacitor went unnoticed. The compressor kept operating, but was working much harder than it should.

We replaced the failed run capacitor and compared the amp draw:

Before (bad capacitor): 21 amps @ 240V
After (new capacitor): 13 amps @ 240V

That’s a huge reduction in current draw, which means:
Lower electrical costs
Less heat generated in the compressor‘s motor windings
Reduced stress on the compressor
Longer compressor life
Less chance of an expensive breakdown

Earlier this spring, we installed a unique/custom cooling system for a farm that shows cattle during fair season.

By pairing commercial refrigeration evaporator coils with traditional A/C condensing units, we were able to keep the barn cool all summer and help the cattle maintain a full, healthy hair coat for the show ring. After spending time out in the heat, the cows enjoy coming back into the AC.

This same style of system is also a great option for garages, workshops, commercial buildings, and other open spaces. It requires no ductwork, takes up very little overhead space, moves a large volume of air for even cooling, and is built to handle dirtier environments than a typical mini-split or AC system. The exposed coil and fan design also make cleaning and maintenance much easier, which is a big advantage in shops and commercial settings.

The only real tradeoff is that the fans are a little louder than traditional methods, but for many applications, the durability, serviceability, and airflow make it a great solution.

If you’ve been thinking about adding air conditioning to your garage, shop, or commercial building, send us a message. We’d be happy to help determine if this type of system is the right fit.

We responded to a no-cooling call and found a tripped breaker, a burnt potential relay, and a compressor with no continuity. The original compressor had been in service since 1996! Since both the compressor and refrigerant were obsolete, we installed a new compressor, converted the system to a modern refrigerant, and got everything back up and running. Another happy customer and another system back in service!

On hot days like today, the calls are usually for coolers and freezers running warm. Today was a little different.

Ertl Refrigeration responded to a keg cooler that was actually freezing the b**r inside. After performing a full diagnostic and obtaining the electrical schematic from the manufacturer’s technical support team, the problem was traced to a faulty thermostat.

The thermostat contacts had failed in the closed position, preventing the refrigeration system from shutting off. As a result, the unit continued running and drove temperatures well below the desired setpoint.

Fortunately, we stock a variety of common replacement parts. A new thermostat was installed on-site, the system was tested, and normal operation was restored.

Keeping common parts in stock helps us reduce downtime and avoid unnecessary delays waiting for parts to arrive.

If your refrigeration equipment isn’t maintaining proper temperatures, give Ertl Refrigeration a call.

When a customer’s cooler goes down, every hour matters.

Ertl Refrigeration recently responded to a service call for a walk-in cooler that was running warm. After diagnosing the system, a failed compressor was found to be the cause of the problem.

With a food delivery scheduled for the following morning, getting the cooler back online quickly was critical.

A replacement compressor was sourced the same day, requiring a six-hour round-trip drive to pick up the necessary parts. During the repair, additional refrigerant leaks were discovered and repaired to ensure the system would operate reliably.

The cooler was back up and running that night and pulled down to temperature in time for the customer’s delivery.

Whether it’s routine maintenance or an emergency breakdown, Ertl Refrigeration is committed to keeping your equipment running when you need it most.

Hello everyone, my name is Beau Ertl and I’m proud to officially introduce Ertl Refrigeration.

I grew up in the Minocqua area before moving away for education and work opportunities. Over the last 5 years, I gained hands-on experience working in commercial refrigeration throughout the Madison area.

After building my skills in the trade, I’ve decided to move back home to Northern Wisconsin and bring that experience and service back to the community that raised me.

Ertl Refrigeration will provide commercial refrigeration installation, service, repair, and preventative maintenance throughout Northern Wisconsin. I’m excited for the opportunity to work with local businesses and continue building relationships within our community.

Thank you to everyone for the support as I begin this new chapter.
