🐍 It’s baby making and baby having season for snakes across South Carolina! 🐍

Right now, a lot is happening in the snake world.

Many of our egg laying snakes have already laid their eggs, and those eggs are beginning to hatch. At the same time, snakes that give live birth, including our native pit vipers, garter snakes, and water snakes, are having their babies too!

That means you may start seeing a lot more tiny snakes out and about as they disperse and search for a place to call home.

But don’t worry, this sudden increase in snake activity is temporary. The harsh reality is that most of these little snakes won’t make it to adulthood. Birds, raccoons, opossums, and even other snakes will quickly make meals out of many of them. Nature can be rough!

You may also notice increased movement from snakes you normally wouldn’t see.

Take canebrake rattlesnakes for example. They breed in the fall, so throughout much of the year, they can sit in one area for weeks or even months at a time, patiently waiting for food. That makes them easy to overlook.

But when fall rolls around and the males start looking for girlfriends, they become much more active and may travel through yards and other areas in search of a mate. ❤️

The good news is that this increase in movement is also temporary.

Eastern garter snakes are a really neat native species that we get the opportunity to work with from time to time. We don’t receive nearly as many calls for them as we do species like rat snakes, so it’s always exciting when we do.

They’re small, beautiful snakes that occasionally find themselves in people’s yards.

Unlike what many people think of when they hear the word “snake,” eastern garter snakes rarely eat rodents. Instead, their diet mainly consists of earthworms, frogs, toads, tadpoles, salamanders, and even small fish.

Another interesting fact is that garter snakes don’t lay eggs. They’re one of the few snakes in our area that give birth to live young, with females capable of having as many as 50 babies in a single litter.

Thankfully, we were able to relocate this individual to suitable habitat that was still within its natural home range. Keeping relocations as close as possible greatly improves a snake’s chances of survival because it’s still in familiar territory. We let him finish his meal in the transport bucket, and once he was ready to move on, we released him into his new spot to continue doing what garter snakes do best.

Hopefully he’ll live a long, healthy life while continuing to play his important role in our native ecosystem.

Whenever possible, we try to minimize our impact on the wildlife we work with. While our priority is always protecting our clients’ homes, we also believe that if there’s a safe, effective way to avoid unnecessary loss of wildlife, it’s worth the extra effort.

In this case, a female raccoon had chosen the client’s crawl space and wall cavities as a den site to raise her young. While they may look cute, raccoons can cause extensive damage to a home by tearing up insulation, damaging HVAC ductwork, and tearing at electrical wiring.

Many people don’t realize that in South Carolina, raccoons are considered a rabies vector species and state law requires that any trapped raccoon be euthanized because they cannot legally be relocated.

Thankfully, situations like this don’t always require trapping.

By using scent based techniques along with controlled hazing from our trained terriers, Hazard and Ruckus, we’re often able to encourage a mother raccoon to relocate her juveniles to a new den site on her own. This gives the female a chance to continue raising their juveniles elsewhere without remaining inside someone’s home.

We then monitor the den with remote cameras to confirm that the mother has successfully moved all of her juveniles and has not returned. Once we’re certain the den is vacant, we permanently exclude the home by sealing the entry points so that no raccoons, or any other wildlife, can move back into the crawl space.

In the end, everyone benefits. The homeowner gets their home back without ongoing damage, the raccoon family gets a second chance in a hopefully more appropriate location, and the house is protected from future wildlife intrusions.

That’s what we call a true win, win!

Copperheads are a common part of life here in South Carolina, and for most homeowners, seeing one from time to time is simply part of living alongside our native wildlife. Rat snakes are probably the most common species we remove from inside homes and honestly, they’re some of the best contortionists in the snake world.

One thing I always tell people is if you see a snake and your first thought is, “How in the world did it get there?”… it’s probably a rat snake.

These snakes are phenomenal climbers and can squeeze through incredibly small openings. They’ve evolved these abilities because they specialize in hunting rodents and birds, which often means climbing walls, trees, roofs, and translates now into finding their way into attics, crawl spaces, garages, and other places they definitely weren’t invited.

Because of that, contractors occasionally run into them in the middle of a job. Most companies understandably don’t want to handle wildlife, especially snakes. If an employee mistakes a venomous snake for a harmless one, the consequences can be serious and extremely costly.

That’s where we come in.

These temps are getting pretty bad around here! 🥵

These poor bat pups were bailing out of their roosts today in desperate need of cooler temperatures. Between the drought and severe heat we’ll likely be seeing a lot of abnormal behavior from wildlife.

Try to be a bit understanding to them during this difficult time!

Canebrake rattlesnakes are phenomenal snakes. Many individuals, like this one, can be STUNNINGLY patterned! Between the vibrant orange dorsal stripe, bold black chevrons, and the rich yellow and cream coloration, they’re truly beautiful animals.

Unfortunately, their populations are declining across much of their range, so we try to lend a hand whenever we have the opportunity.

This lovely client accidentally spooked this rattlesnake from its hiding spot while mowing her lawn. She gave us a call for assistance, and we immediately hopped in the truck for an after hours weekend call (hence Lincoln’s sweatpants! 😂).

We were worried the snake had already disappeared, but thankfully we found it slowly creeping along the fence line. After safely relocating it to suitable habitat, it was on its way.

Any guesses on how long this beautiful canebrake is?
