Q: What should I check before buying an older home from an electrical standpoint?

A: Buying an older home is exciting, but the electrical system deserves a close look before you sign anything. Key things to check: What size is the electrical panel. Is it 100 amp or 200 amp? Are there any signs of DIY electrical work (mismatched wiring, exposed cables, double-tapped breakers)? Does the home have grounded outlets throughout? Are there GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms? Is there any knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring present? We strongly recommend an independent electrical inspection before purchasing any older home.

Q: What is an AFCI breaker and why do I need them?

A: An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) breaker is a special safety device that detects dangerous electrical arcs caused by damaged wiring, loose connections, or worn cords. These arcs can lead to electrical fires — AFCIs help prevent that by shutting off power when they sense a problem.
Modern building codes require AFCI protection in bedrooms, living rooms, and many other areas of your home. If your home was built before 2002, you may benefit from upgrading to AFCI breakers for better fire protection.

Happy from Atkinson Electrical Services! ⚡

Q: What does whole-house surge protection do?

A: Whole-house surge protection is installed at your main electrical panel. It acts as your home’s first line of defense against sudden voltage spikes from lightning strikes, utility grid issues, or even large appliances turning on and off inside your home.
When it detects a surge, it instantly diverts the dangerous excess energy safely to the ground, protecting every outlet, light, appliance, TV, computer, and HVAC system in your house at once.

Q: How long does home electrical wiring actually last?

A: The lifespan of your home's wiring depends on the type and how well it's been maintained. Copper wiring in good condition can last 50–70 years or more. However, older wiring types like aluminum wiring can deteriorate much faster and carry real safety risks as they age. Heat, pests chewing through insulation, and physical damage can all shorten the lifespan too. If your home is over 30 years old and hasn't had an electrical inspection, now is a great time to book one.

Q: What is the difference between amps, volts, and watts?

A: These three words are everywhere on appliances but most people have never had them explained simply. Here's what they actually mean:
🔵 Volts = The strength of the electrical supply. Think of it as how powerful the electricity coming out of your wall is.
🔵 Amps = How much electricity a device is actually pulling out of that outlet
🔵 Watts = The total amount of power being consumed. It's simply volts multiplied by amps

Qâť“: Why do my lights flicker or dim when I turn on the air fryer or microwave?

Ađź’ˇ: When a big appliance starts up, it pulls a lot of power all at once. If your wiring or electrical panel is older or not quite big enough, the voltage drops for a second and your lights dim or flicker.
Occasional small flickers might be normal, but if it happens a lot, it can wear out your bulbs and electronics faster and sometimes points to a bigger safety issue.

📞765-499-8043 and we can check your panel and wiring so everything runs smoothly.

Q: What is the difference between two-prong and three-prong plugs?

A: A two-prong plug works well for many things but it doesn’t have any extra safety protection. If something goes wrong inside the appliance the extra prong gives the electricity a safe path to flow away into the ground instead of going through a person. This helps prevent shocks. Most newer TVs, computers, hair dryers, and kitchen appliances come with the three-prong plug because it’s safer.
