Q: What are the signs that your home has
aluminium wiring and why does it matter?

A: This is one of the most important things homeowners in our area need to know — especially if you live in a home built between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s.

Signs your home may have aluminium wiring:
✅ Built between 1965 and 1975
✅ Flickering lights with no obvious cause
✅ Outlets or switches that feel warm
✅ Frequent breaker trips

Here's why it matters:
🔴 It expands and contracts more than copper
🔴 Loose connections cause heat and arcing
🔴 Most outlets and switches weren't designed for it

Q: What should I know about electrical safety in the kitchen?

A: Kitchens have some of the highest electrical demands in the home with appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, and dishwashers running at once. Overloaded circuits are common, so make sure GFCI outlets are installed near sinks and use dedicated circuits for major appliances.
Keep cords away from water and heat sources, and never use damaged plugs. If your kitchen feels outdated or breakers trip often, AES can upgrade your setup for safety and efficiency.

Q: What can I do to baby-proof my house electrically?

A: Baby-proofing your home’s electrical system is one of the best ways to keep little ones safe. Start by installing tamper-resistant (TR) outlets that block small objects from being inserted. Use outlet covers or plugs on unused sockets, and secure power cords with clips to keep them out of reach.

For extra protection, make sure all outlets near water areas have GFCI protection and consider installing safety covers on switches. If your home is older, a full electrical safety inspection can catch hidden hazards before they become problems. AES can help with upgrades, installations, and peace of mind.

Q: Can a storm damage my electrical system?

The answer is yes — and often in ways you can't see.
⚡ Lightning strikes can send a massive power surge through your entire home in a split second, frying appliances, damaging your panel, and burning out wiring inside your walls.
⚡ High winds can damage power lines and cause voltage to fluctuate as it comes into your home — that irregular power is hard on appliances and electronics.
⚡ Flooding and moisture can get into outlets, switches, and your electrical panel — creating hidden shock and fire hazards that aren't obvious until it's too late.
After any major storm, watch for these warning signs:
🔴 Lights flickering or behaving strangely
🔴 Burning smell near outlets or your panel
🔴 Outlets or switches that have stopped working
🔴 Breakers that keep tripping for no obvious reason

If you experience any electrical damage call AES 765-499-8043

Q: What should I do if I see sparks from an outlet?

💡 A: A small, brief blue spark when you plug something in quickly can occasionally be normal it's just the circuit energising. But a large spark, a spark that's yellow or white, one that comes with a popping sound, or sparks that happen when nothing is being plugged in those are serious warning signs. They can indicate a loose wire, a faulty outlet, or a short circuit inside your wall. Any of these can lead to an electrical fire — often without you even knowing it's started.
What to do:
🔴 Stop using that outlet immediately
🔴 Don't plug anything else into it
🔴 Call a licensed electrician to inspect it before using it again

Call 765-499-8043 if you are experiencing electrical issues

Q: What should I check before buying an older home from an electrical standpoint?

A: Buying an older home is exciting, but the electrical system deserves a close look before you sign anything. Key things to check: What size is the electrical panel. Is it 100 amp or 200 amp? Are there any signs of DIY electrical work (mismatched wiring, exposed cables, double-tapped breakers)? Does the home have grounded outlets throughout? Are there GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms? Is there any knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring present? We strongly recommend an independent electrical inspection before purchasing any older home.
