I always add lots of dill and fennel to my vegetable garden because they are host plants for the eastern black swallowtail butterfly. 🐛🦋

Each evening I head out to the garden to gather greens and herbs for dinner, and now I get to check on these little ones, too. It will be so fun to watch them grow - seeing a chrysalis this year would be amazing!

I'm starting a new project—walking all of the Greenbelt properties by the end of the year.
Today was property #1, right near home. The trail took about 45 minutes… including a wrong turn that had me in Bradley Palmer State Park. I got myself back on track with the Greenbelt Go app.

What I saw:
– tons of Lindera benzoin (sadly past peak bloom, but still worth it). Scratching the bark and spelling the spiciness of it was very validating (yes, right shrub). the spicy sweetness was subtle and delightful.
– skunk cabbage in full flower
– and my first butterflies of the year… two mourning cloaks 🦋
