It’s nice when an air handler is installed in a way that actually allows access to the panels. Whether it’s preventative maintenance, service, or swapping out a coil, the little things make a big difference.

PSA:

Recently repaired a leaking evaporator coil after 3-4 other companies had already looked at it and couldn’t find the leak. Leak searches can take time, patience, and the right methods. Some are genuinely difficult to locate.

What bothered me more was the misinformation the homeowner was told.

One company said it was illegal to add refrigerant to a leaking residential system. Another said you can only add up to 2 lbs. Neither statement is true.

One company also charged the homeowner for a leak search despite never actually finding the leak. At Harrell HVAC, if we charge for a leak search and cannot locate the leak, we are not going to charge you for a completed leak search. The entire purpose of the service is to find the leak.

Here’s the actual EPA guidance in simple terms:

• Technicians can legally add refrigerant to many leaking residential systems under 50 lbs refrigerant charge.
• EPA-certified recovery and handling practices still must be followed.
• Leak rate regulations primarily apply to appliances containing 50+ lbs of refrigerant.

For larger systems:

• Comfort cooling equipment containing 50+ lbs of refrigerant that exceeds a 10% annual leak rate generally must be repaired within 30 days or retired/retrofitted.

HVAC systems are sealed systems. Refrigerant does not get “used up.”

If a system is low, it’s usually because:

1. There is a leak
2. The system was never charged correctly
3. Small losses occurred over time during service if proper low-loss practices weren’t followed

There’s enough misinformation in this industry already. Homeowners deserve accurate information so they can make informed decisions.
