Eighteen-year-old Timothy Harrison was a senior at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Like many students, he looked forward to graduating. But on graduation day in May 2021, things did not go as planned.
Instead of getting ready for the ceremony, Timothy went to work at a Waffle House restaurant in Center Point. He believed he had no way to attend his graduation. He did not have a ride, graduation tickets, or even a cap and gown. His mother, who worked at a daycare, could not take the day off to help him. Timothy was also estranged from his father, so he felt he had no one else to turn to.
When his manager, Cedric Hampton, saw Timothy arrive for work, he was shocked. He asked why Timothy was not at his graduation. After hearing the reason, Cedric refused to let him miss such an important moment.
Cedric quickly called an off-duty assistant manager, who went out to buy Timothy a dress shirt, gray pants, a tie, and shoes. Four coworkers each gave around $40 to help pay for the clothes, and kind customers also donated money.
Another coworker, Shantana Blevins, drove to Timothy's school to collect his cap and gown. She then drove him nearly 20 miles to the graduation ceremony at the Birmingham CrossPlex. They arrived just in time for Timothy to walk across the stage with his classmates.
Timothy later said that putting on his new clothes made him feel "like the president."
His inspiring story soon spread across the country. It later helped him receive a full scholarship to Lawson State Community College. Cedric even helped Timothy move into his dorm, proving that sometimes the people who believe in you can change your life forever.
