Today, DesignEDGE had the honor of giving the Board Members of the Urban League of the Upstate a special first look inside the historic McClaren Medical Shelter—a building now proudly bearing the Urban League name and preparing to serve the community in a powerful new way.
The visit began with an inspiring dedication prayer from Lakesa Whitner, setting the tone for a moment rooted in purpose, history, and hope.
We also had the opportunity to hear from artist Herman Miller, who unveiled the vision for a remarkable outdoor glass sculpture honoring the legacy of Dr. E.E. McClaren. The sculpture will take the form of a foothill mountain range, created from translucent glass circles inspired by the lollipops Dr. McClaren was known to give to the children who visited his office. 🍭✨
More than a work of art, it will stand as a beautiful symbol of strength, diversity, legacy, and enduring empowerment—connecting Dr. McClaren’s impact on generations past with the possibilities of generations still to come.
And now, that vision is becoming reality.
The sculpture is being created.
The building is being transformed.
And the McClaren Institute for Health & Quality of Life is coming to fruition.
We are incredibly excited for the community to walk through these doors and experience this historic space in October.
What once represented a groundbreaking chapter in our community’s history is being thoughtfully transformed to serve its future.
