One of the biggest questions I get is, “What size mud kitchen should I choose?”

This photo shows the smallest and largest models I offer side-by-side.

⬅️ XL Extra Tall
• 65” wide
• 29” counter height

➡️ Compact Medium Height
• 35” wide
• 23” counter height

Most people immediately notice the difference in width, but counter height can be just as important. A height that’s comfortable for a 7-year-old can feel very different for a 2-year-old.

The XL gives multiple children plenty of room to play together, while the Compact is a great fit for smaller spaces and younger children.

That’s why every mud kitchen is built to order. The goal isn’t to choose the biggest one—it’s to choose the one that fits your family best.

Tell me your kids’ ages in the comments, and I’ll tell you which height I’d recommend.

One of my favorite custom builds recently.

This family needed a mud kitchen that worked for children with a wide range of ages, so we added a lower side work surface that younger kids can comfortably reach while older siblings still have a full-height kitchen to enjoy.

It’s a simple change, but it means more kids can play together, explore, create, and get messy without feeling left out because the counter is too high.

Every family uses their space a little differently, which is why I offer custom sizing, heights, and features to fit your needs.

Every time those potting benches show up, people turn them into adorable little mud kitchens… and then they’re gone almost immediately.

Did you know you can help your mud kitchen last for many seasons?

If you got one of our kitchens last year or earlier, thank you. As we head into spring, it’s a good time to check if it needs any maintenance.

Take a look at the paint—if you see chips or scratches, touch them up. The goal is to protect any exposed wood.

You can find your original color on my website (link in bio) or at RBJWoodworks.com/colors. Each one includes the exact Home Depot mix label so you can have more paint made locally.
