Over the course of the last couple of days Amanda and I helped the lady Nextdoor to her mamas get some desperately needed clearance. 3 days and around 40 trees or shrubs were touched. With only one removal taking place. We absolutely love pruning, and take great pride in that work. The catalpa made it into my personal cool tree list even. The structure it has is extremely deceiving and it’s got a super cool sprawl too it. Unfortunately the tree that we were going to cable, is now being discussed to remove. The risk I seen while inspecting it, would not allow me to charge for or complete an extra service I wouldn’t do for myself.

If you have any clearance pruning, or pruning in general, don’t be afraid to give us a holler. The craftsmanship and care we afford are extremely hard to find. Knowing where to make the cut and how to get to the place, without disturbing extra materials is the biggest battle.

Ornamental pruning is so near and dear to my heart. Today Amanda completed her first full clearance pruning, on ornamentals. I gave her a bit of direction, and an idea of how I would do it. Then I walked away, so I wouldn’t micromanage her and got set up of the next cluster of trees we were going to be working from a rope. By the time I had thrown into three trees and set remote rigging, she had produced a beautifully finished clearance. Her attention to detail, and overall care are hard to come by. Proud of my partner is an understatement. She continues to grow, learn, and try new things.

If you’re looking for true craftsmanship, look no further. Illinois Tree Care loves pruning

So I’ve spent the last couple weeks out in Virginia, as a staff member and instructor, for one of my favorite events Rec The River. My presentation was on building mechanical advantage, basic to complex. It is an absolute honor and privilege to be able to provide new insight to folks of all skill levels. I appreciate all of the feed back i got from those that attended my talk!
That said we are home and looking to get some estimates in. Do you have a tree in a weird spot equipment can’t get too? I’ve got the solution and can minimize ground impact while doing it. Give us a shout for any and all of your tree care needs; we specialize in the weird technical situations, pruning and plant health care.

There’s an extreme risk storm cell moving through late this afternoon into this evening. The reports I’m seeing are predicting 85-100 mph wind gusts. Keep us in mind for any storm damage you may experience. I have logged thousands of hours doing storm mitigation across the country, and while i advertise mostly for pruning projects these days you will be hard pressed to find someone in our area who has the same storm experience. The picture is from Saturday, when I was requested to come to Madison Wisconsin to assist in storm removals from structure

Amanda and I tackled this nasty oak today. Fences, trees, and utility within the proximity of the drop zone. Rigged what had to be rigged and free cut the rest. Absolutely covered in Hypoxolon canker.

Hypoxylon canker is a devastating, opportunistic fungal disease that targets severely weakened oak trees.
We specialize in hazard tree mitigation. Don’t wait until it falls on your structure todo something about it.

Sometimes we do crane things without a crane. Failed hackberry, situated directly under this massive pecan. Daylight could be seen through all of the splits, but that wasn’t a concern. Access the pecan, hang a couple blocks, set the slings and then shelf cut the pieces. Load transfered them off into the yard for easy processing.
While I am mostly advertising for pruning and phc styles of work, this is what I’ve spent the better part of my career doing. Nasty trees with limited access for equipment done safely.

You wouldn’t go to a doctor you knew was committing malpractice would you? So why would you allow a tree service todo the same thing to your trees? We don’t give trees a “haircut”; that would imply we are only cutting dead regenative tissues. Outside of removing deadwood that simply isn’t the case. A removal is a removal is a removal; where as pruning (often referred to as trimming), is dealing with live tissue and should be focused around the overall biomass, health and well being of the tree. Do not let someone tell you that topping is ok! You are forcibly tapping into the tree’s reserves, thus allowing them to be extremly prone to diseases and pests. You are opening them up to sun scald; yes trees can become sunburnt. You are also forcing them to activate secondary nodes, and while the sucker growth can be managed and maintain, you are forcing it to have weak attachments until that long process is completed. Over my years of experience, I have seen more poorly maintained canopies on roofs than I have hollow trees. These are living beings, that stay balanced and upright via a dampening system, the dampening system is their branch structures. Do not be fear mongered into malpractice by someone that hasn’t taken the time to learn about tree biology.

Bio-mechanical damages
What are they exactly, and how do we prevent them? This photo was taken the other day on job site. Amanda noticed it and immediately understood what was happening. Big beautiful wind chime and gouged bark; so what’s happening? Every time a good gust of wind comes through the chimes are swinging into the trunk of the tree, and just like a river over a stone, it is slowly chiseling the bark away. Eventually with this kind of wounding the tree will succumb to disease and or pests. This is an example of a biomechanical wound. In this situation simply extending the hanging platform further away from the trunk would have been the solution. Other examples include “dozer blight”, this is when heavy equipment catches the tree ripping away at it. Even your lawn mower hitting those surface roots. In those two examples a root protection zone before your grading project or a compost bed become your greatest ally in the fight to retain your trees.
By definition a biomechanics wound is; refers to physical damage such as broken branches, torn bark from animals, or mechanical injuries from equipment that ruptures the bark, cambium, and xylem. The trees natural response is to begin CODIT and seal the wound, they never heal they just seal.

If you have love for your trees and their overall health, we are the folks to call in southern Indiana. We specialize in pruning and retention based projects, while maintaining the ability to safely get them to the ground as well. Give me a call to set up an estimate. 217-412-4637
