Some wonderful shots from a native pollinator meadow we seeded back in 2021 in the Catskills. Its really filled in wonderfully, species migrating around, carving our their niche, and generally keeping invasive species at bay at this point. Its full of monarchs, other butterflies and moths, and a constant buzzing sound of bees. In addition to pollinator insects, native meadows are incredible bird habitat providing shelter and food year round. This one makes our hearts very full!

Meadow projects are not 'seed it and walk away'. They take a couple years to really fill in and get going. While we weren't able to be present through all of the establishment phase, the client herself is an amazing gardener and steward of her land, guiding this as it established. Now she can really sit back with minimal work for maximum enjoyment and habit for years and years to come.

Meadow and seeding installations are something we are passionate about as a transformation of a landscape from sterile and frequent maintenance, to something bursting with activity and long term lower maintenance. The true definition of a sun/shade garden with this nice little garden expansion/renovation project.

The existing garden bed was being smothered by invasive bittersweet and stilt grass from the neighbor's property. After clearing out everything on our clients side, we stripped another 4 feet of lawn out to expand the bed. With newly exposed boulders and freeing of her existing plantings, we added an assortment of native shrubs and perennials that can handle part to full shade and thrive in the harsh soils we uncovered around the natural gas box. As out client is a gardener herself, she will fill in the gaps over time with her own plantings. The native plants chosen will be able to spread and provide habitat for native pollinators, insects, and birds throughout the year.

Plants include:
Christmas fern - Polystichum acrostichoides
Evergreen wood fern - Dryopteris marginalis
Wild geranium - Geranium maculatum (espresso cultivar)
Summer sweet - Clethra alnifolia 'Chrystaline'
Beard tongue - Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red'
Tufted hair grass - Deschampsia cespitosa
And a new eastern red bud to screen the pool pump - Cercos canadensis

Lastly a thick layer of Adirondack mulch to settle the plants in and keep the invasives at bay for now (unfortunately they'll need to be maintained unless the neighbor wants to clear their side as well)

What You’ll Do: You’ll be hands-on in the field helping us transition traditional properties into dynamic, resilient "living systems." This includes planting native trees and perennials, performing specialized ecological garden stewardship (no heavy chemicals!), and helping care for our growing native plant inventory.

Who We’re Looking For:
Experience is a bonus, but NOT required! We are happy to train the right person.
Someone hardworking, proactive, and excited to learn about horticulture and restoration ecology.
Able to perform physical labor, lift 50 lbs, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Must have reliable personal transportation.

Spring is finally here, and we’re back on-site with one of our very first clients from 2020! 🌿

Before starting our next installation phase, we gave these established beds a bit of a needed "edit." Even the best native designs face pressure from aggressive suburban invasives. This season called for a heavier reset to give our desired species the upper hand.

The Process:
Clearance: Removing the "bad guys" to see how the natives have self-sorted and thrived.

Division: Transplanting successful, vigorous species into gaps.

Infill: Adding new grass plugs to restore the garden’s seasonal structure that had been lost.

A fresh coat of mulch to help legibility of the desired species, keep weeds at bay, and help with some early heat waves was needed.

Ecological landscaping isn't about speed and hacking—it’s about stewardship. By understanding the site’s dynamic lessons, we ensure the landscape thrives long-term rather than just surviving in a static state between clean outs.

Slides 1-3: serious invasives such as leader celandine, mulberry, some wild alliums, and garlic mustard had established. Removal exposed large gaps that the final edit filled in

Slides 4-5: less serious wild alliums were filling in. Removal exposed some really thriving natives we used for transplanting elsewhere

Slides 7-end: thriving natives reseeding, co-mingingling, and sorting themselves out in wonderful and interesting combinations.
