Is your A/C or furnace over 10 years old? That age alone does not mean it is time to replace it, but it does mean the math starts to shift.

A good rule of thumb is the $5,000 rule. Multiply the age of your system by the repair cost. If that number exceeds $5,000, replacement usually makes more financial sense than pouring money into repairs.

For example, a 12-year-old system with a $500 repair comes out to $6,000, which puts you in replace territory. A 10-year-old system with a $200 repair? That is $2,000, and repairing is likely the smarter move.

A few other things worth considering: older systems often lose efficiency over time, meaning your energy bills creep up quietly even when nothing seems broken. Newer equipment is significantly more efficient and can reduce monthly costs.
