A Small Sign, A Big Dream 💚🏡
I may be one of the few people who actually got excited about Gig Harbor’s new temporary sign ordinance. 😂
As a small local business owner who personally places every one of my signs, I appreciate the City taking the time to clarify where temporary signs are allowed. The permit is free, the approved locations are mapped out, and everyone plays by the same rules.
In the early days, while I was still working my 9-to-5, these signs felt like a living dream board. I’d pass them on my way to work and get excited about where this little business might go someday. My boys would spot them from the back seat and yell, “Good Grandson!” every time we drove by one.
That part still gets me.
To most people, they’re just little green signs. To me, they represent early mornings, late nights, taking a chance on myself, and slowly building something I hope my boys will be proud of one day.
For me, it’s never just been about advertising. It’s about representing The Good Grandson professionally, respecting public spaces, following the rules, and introducing my business to neighbors the right way.
Thank you, Gig Harbor, for supporting small businesses while keeping our community looking beautiful. I’ll be the guy out there with a stack of green signs, a permit in hand, and a smile on my face every time my kids yell, “Good Grandson!” 🏡🛠️
At the June 8 city council meeting, council approved Ordinance 1562, which updated the city’s sign code (GHMC 17.80) to clarify where temporary signs may be placed within public rights of way. The changes resolve inconsistencies in the existing code and ensure sign regulations can be applied fairly, regardless of a sign’s message or purpose.
Here are the main takeaways:
-- The update does not affect temporary signs located on private property and maintains existing permitting and enforcement requirements.
-- Temporary signs may be located at specific intersections as shown on the Directors Map (also available from the city website).
-- Obtaining a temporary sign permit is free. There are no fees associated with the process.
The ordinance helps ensure consistent and equal enforcement, protects public spaces, and supports the city's mission of building trust, delivering effective municipal services, and maintaining a safe and well-managed community.
